Favorite Lesser-known Vols

Travis is UT's all-time single season leader for yards in a season...not really overlooked if you ask me.
I think if you asked fans to rate the top 5 UT RBs of the last 20 years most people wouldn't name him.

Joey Mathews - he was there when I was in school. From Sevierville if I remember correctly. If I recall, he had some freak injury while walking down the steps from the Hill. Supposed to have a cannon, but could never get on the field much playing behind PM and TM.

Von Reeves - I still remember John Ward saying his name when he'd score a TD.

Tracy Hayworth, because he is from Winchester my hometown. Graduated 1989 on one of the most talented teams in Tennessee History.

There have been some good players from Winchester considering its size, including Jeff Hall and Fulmer in addition to Hayworth.

Tracy Hayworth would give his eye teeth to coach at Tennessee. An excellent young man, and presently working in the Junior College Ranks.

From the very recent team, I'd say Jacques McClendon. You heard a lot of the great things the Sullins boys did as walk ons (and they deserve high praise) but you really didn't hear that much about Jacques. He was always there, silently holding the line together without seeking publicity or fanfare. Rarely called for penalties--there's an old saying that OL never want to hear their name called and he fits that bill.

That's because we have had better backs than him, but if you don't know how Travis Stephens is...turn off your computer.

I always take to certain players that aren't necessarily stars. For instance I really like:

Jason Mitchell, he was all-Vol and an Econ major like me

Shawn Summers, he was from my home town. Oak Ridge won state in '91 with him playing RB/LB. He played CB, and held the all-time record for return yards at Tennessee.

Who are some of your favorites and why?

ahh shawn summers. I remember his cleats well. Back in the day, I was the kicker my soph year and remember him splitting my numbers and stepping on my chest on his way to the end zone for Oak Ridge. Man, that was a scary team to play on the road.

I loved it when Fred Weary was moved to center and was so sweaty he had to change pants at half time.
The little white towel wasn't enough to keep the QB hands dry.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

1. And it's not even close - Shawn Bryson

Others: Harrell, Brett Smith, Tinsley, Coker, Aubrayo Franklin, Nevin Mckenzie, Vlad Richard, DeAngelo Willingham, Teddy Gains (local guy), Nash and Kent, Antone Davis

Gerald Riggs Jr is my FAV (I went to RB '04). I liked James Banks as I had family in Terre Houte (sp). Dominique Stephenson as someone mentioned above.

Teddy "Toast" Gaines......horrendous.

I agree with JJ McCleasky. He was undersized for the SEC and walked on at Tennessee, and ended up starting several years. Again he was undersized bigtime for the next level and was not drafted. Tried out as FA and made a pro team playing lots of minutes for several years in the NFL - the Cardinals I believe. Never a real star but a great overachiever.

Another good choice - Billy Ratliffe who battled lot's of injuries in his career. He made the big play in the 98 Arkansas game (calling it beforehand) when he charged the OL and pushed him into tripping the Arkansas QB, and then he also recovered the fumble on same play. Also he had a bigtime important sack in the NC game at a critical point in the game. An unsung hero from that great team IMO.

Don't know if you'd call him a lesser known vol but I loved Omar Gaither when he was here. Dude was a hitter!
