Favorite Keith Jackson UT call

THIS! Jackson was an ABC Big 10 homer for woodson; and even Paraded his bias during the SEC Championship game vs Auburn. Got it on VHS! Sorry; but the Truth stands.

Yes he did, but I always just thought it was just because he was a Big 10 homer instead of anything towards UT in particular. Big 10 homerism was rampant in the 90s among announcers.

I thought it was Bruce Wilkerson

How have you been doing, Ulysses? Now that you mention it, you could be right. I would have to go back to the video to verify one way or the other.

P.S. Ulysses, you are correct, it was Bruce Wilkerson. To relive this glorious moment and call in Tennessee football history, fast-forward to the 1:53:00 mark of this video: 1986 Sugar Bowl (Tennessee 35 Miami 7 - ABC Sports) - YouTube.

For the record, the '86 Sugar Bowl was the most ferocious, 60-minute performance I have seen from a Tennessee defense in 51 years of fandom.

John trumped him, however, with "The National Champion is clad in Big Orange." 'twas the greatest signoff, farewell statement in broadcasting history.

My favorite memory of him will always be the 1986 Sugar Bowl. At its outset, Jackson and, particularly, Frank Broyles essentially stated that the lowly Tennessee Volunteers should feel privileged to occupy the same field as the mighty Miami Hurricanes. As we proceeded to slaughter the nation’s 2nd-ranked team, their utter astonishment rose to a crescendo until Chris White put the finishing touches on the evening’s festivities with “another [Miami] turnover, setting up another Tennessee touchdown.”

If you remember after Miami scored first (Michael Irvin) Broyles said Tennessee better watch out "Miami likes to go for the jugular early."

One of the best at his calling.

I recall later in his career, when he got a UT game at Neyland he would rail on the orange jerseys with white numerals... could not see the numbers clearly from the booth.... wanted a black trim makes it easier to see. UT did trim the numbers the following season. That was another good call.

I remember Jackson complaining about having to call Tennessee UCLA games, especially in the 60's and 70's because he couldn't read the numbers for either team.

Sad to hear of his passing, but for the reasons given by many already on here, I was not a Keith Jackson fan.

I grew up in the days of no cable so Keith was listened to every week in the 70's and 80's. With the passing of one of the legends of sports broadcasting, what is your favorite Keith Jackson UT call? Mine is Jeff Powell's long TD run against Miami in the 1986 sugar bowl. Was at the game but watched replay more times than I can count, and can still hear the call like it was yesterday! RIP, Mr Jackson you were the best College football TV guy ever!

No offense to Keith Jackson, but back in the day, I turned down the TV and listened to John Ward and Bill Anderson on the radio if I watched at home. So for most of his Tennessee games, I didn't hear him.

Those days are long over, but I never really was a Jackson fan. Gowdy, Enberg, and Summerall were my 3 greatest sports announcers during that time.

was a Jackson fan until the Sugar Vols played Miami in the 1986 Sugar Bowl....He and Broyles constantly bad-mouthing the Vols and just "waiting" for Miami to break out and put us in our place.....

Then he single-handedly lobbied hard for Woodson to win the Heisman instead of Peyton...

He had a good voice....but many fail to remember how much of a BAMA homer he was during UT-Bama games...

1998 championship game..."it's a full moon tonight and it's Tennessee ORANGE"

Yeah the moon comment I remember except I thought he said ‘there’s an orange moon rising over Knoxville tonight “. But I could mis-remember as I so oft do...

Anybody remember the open mike during the 98 championship game when Jackson said "I don't care what anyone thinks, Florida State is going to win this ballgame." ???

Remember when Powell broke the 60 yard run and Broyals said Bennie Blades has world class speed and was trying to run Powell down and Powell went of and left him like he was sitting still and Keith spoke up and said i wonder what kind of speed Powell has Blades has world class speed that run sealed the deal and a party broke out for a week.:clapping:

It was a natural hole

I remember him saying something about it being Chirichaua country and when the moon came out it was orange.

"If this keeps up, I'm going to know the words to Rocky Top." - '86 Sugar Bowl shortly after the Vols scored the 35th unanswered point.

That was the first one I thought of. He was a voice of my childhood who lasted well into my adulthood. I am sorry to know that he's gone. RIP, you ol' rascal.

"Powell is gone!......Goodbye, Touchdown!"

I've watched that play, and that call, hundreds of times.

In an era when networks like ESPN trot out one talking head after another who think the more they talk, the better it is...Keith Jackson knew when to let the game speak for itself, and when he opened his mouth, he always said something that was worth listening to. Those words will never be spoken about the likes of Herby or others like him.

Go Vols.

Remember that Jackson was often invited and loved to speak at Alabama events. I don't recall him ever speaking at UT events. He was a Bammer homer and it wasn't just for the Vols vs Tide games. I respect his announcing abilities but never enjoyed his bias.
