The Howard's Rock thing at Clemson is pretty unique.

As far as simplicity goes, the old Miami entrance was hard to beat. The band formed two lines. There was some smoke. The team ran out. Flashbulbs went off. Carnage ensued.

They still use that entrance. It's just the players running through the smoke aren't as good as the guys who used to do it.

Running through the T has always been my favorite.

Another favorite was Colorado running the buffalo.

And I always liked Florida St's back in the day when the Seminole mascot would chuck the flaming spear to midfield from the end of the field.

Of course someone had to whine about some safety bullcrap I think so they changed it to the mascot riding on a horse and staking it at midfield.

No way that was more dangerous than Colorado running the Buffalo.

They just started it in the last decade or so, but the annual Notre Dame bowl loss is quickly climbing my list of favorite traditions.

I completely missed that one. I thought Chief Osceola had always just ridden to midfield and thrown the spear into the ground.

It is the most overrated tradition in sports. There is absolutely nothing I find that impressive about it.

He always has, and despite recent thrashings of the "En See DUbbleay" (read with Bowdenesque inflection), he always will.

YouTube - Osceola and the Flaming spear

Still the second-sweetest pregame in sports; next to the T, of course.

PS- yes, it is still flaming.

Pretty cool info page here too, for those bored late-nite lurkers. The only tribe who never signed a peace treaty with the US government... Florida State Seminoles: A Tradition of Tribute :: Home Page & Video

The 12th man "walk-on" kickoff team at Texas A&M is pretty cool.
Not that they have a monopoly on the tradition, but Texas A&M has done good job of maintaining the once pervasive concept of "when the team scores we all score".

I like most of the traditions that have been mentioned. I also dig when the rufneks drive the Sooner Schooner accross the field whenever OK scored a TD at a home game.

I see some people ripping on the "Dotting the I" saying whats so great about it. I think you can level that same criticism at most traditions. Whats so great about running through a "T", or singing a song, or slapping a rock?

Most traditions are great in the eye of the beholder and hard to fully appreciate to the outsider.

The thing is none of those other traditions gets as much hype as the dotting the i. Not even close.

The Howard's Rock thing at Clemson is pretty unique.

It is pretty impressive. The team bus pulls outside the top of the hill, let's all the players out, building the hype. Then they touch the rock as they come down the hill. I make it to one or two Clemson games a year and have to say it's a pretty unique pre-game.
