Favorite Bob Kesling Quotes?

It isn't that Bob is boring, because he is. It's that he seems like he comes in either unprepared, or screws up a lot of players names. Ward was amazing in the fact that you could visualize what was happening, which is what a radio man should do. If I wanted a score ticker, I can find those on the internet. I want some excitement.

My other criticism of Bob is you can't always tell where the game is at. This is especially true of basketball, when he does not call score, possession, etc. often enough.

So yeah, John Ward is the man, a legend, but noone expected Bumbling Bob to be the next JW, but I do expect someone better than what we have.

i think he's trying to stay away from being john ward, he doesn't use his sayings such as "touchdown tennessee", instead he uses tennessee touchdown which to me just doesn't sound right

since Bob is kinda of like Homer Simpson with hair I think his signature call should be "D'Oh, Tennessee Scores!"

"Touchdown (Insert Player Name Here), Touchdown Tennessee"

"To the Checkerboards!"

Sorry, when it comes to Kesling, there just aren't that many memorable quotes. The ones listed above are ones that he uses almost every game so their not really unique IMO.

I've always hoped they would Jeff Francis into the booth and put Kesling on the sidelines. He understands what UT is doing on the field better then probably some of UT's freshmen players.

We have a John Ward thread but what about our current voice of the Vols? The man has been calling UT games since 1999. Surely he has accumulated some memorable game quotes?

*I don't listen to him myself...but I've heard other SEC fans say he is not as bad or bland as we make him out to be*

Yes, he is.

But I will play. His most memorable quote? "What a turn of events." in response to the Dobbs nail boot pass to Jauan Jennings to beat Georgia. He took a wonderful miraculous play, and made it as bland as he could. When he retires, it will be the end of an error.

Whoever hired him? Thanks for nothing.

Geez 14 year bump…

Is there anyone else that would do better? I think Mike Keith would do fine, but other than that I just don't know.

Yes there is. Anyone with a speaking voice. The only way it could be worse? Well if they replaced him with Ed Orgeron via a totally unexpected career change for the ex LSU coach? That might be worse. But we would be less POed with Ed because we would be too busy wondering what the heck he said, rather than rolling our eyes at the terminal neutrality, and total lack of personality.

First game, he would get KTFO by at least three defensive players for asking a stupid question.

Bob seems like a good dude, but if you're relying on him to tell you what's happening, umm, good luck.

I was traveling during the UF game this year and had to turn off the broadcast. It was so frustrating.

Perhaps you are not old enough to remember Bob on WBIR, and Jefferson Pilot.

I was still in high school when Bob started doing sports on WBIR. Back then, there were only 4 stations you could get on TV. Channel 2 was the educational (PBS) channel out of Sneedville. WATE was the NBC affiliate on Channel 6, WBIR had Channel 10 (CBS), and WTVK (ABC) was on the UHF band on channel 26. 26 had just started it news program maybe a year or two before, so they pretty much stunk.

We had always watched channel 10. Had all my life. Within two months of Bob doing sports, I found myself tuning into Channel 6. I didn't realize why back then and didn't really think about it. But I just preferred them over 10 until I graduated.

A few years later, Jefferson Pilot started showing games that we could not get from ABC, CBS or NBC. So, even though Jefferson Pilot has a poorer viewing experience than the major networks, it still meant you got to see a game you would not get to see otherwise. Bob was doing sideline reports for JP. By the third Jefferson Pilot game I watched, everytime during a timeout or injury stoppage they said, "Let's check in with Bob Kesling on the sidelines"... I would reply, "Let's not", because it was quite honestly some of the most boring crap I had ever seen. The only upside? If you needed another slice of pizza, beer, or the phone rang, you had time to deal with it. Cause you weren't missing anything important. But it did make me realize why I liked channel 6. No Bob.

I don't know what ever possessed the powers that be over the Vol Network to think Bob could ever replace John. John had a way of making you give a damn about the game even when we were losing. Bob has a way of throwing a pail of ice water even on a victory.

Only reason he is still doing it is because there must be some people still listening to him. I guess we love mediocrity. Since they gave him the reins, football has not been what it was when John was leading us to the games. And I can't help but realize that all the silly stuff fans have done: The Schiano thing, the Cuonzo Martin petition, the trashing of the field against Ole Miss happened with Bob being our voice. We were classier folks with John around. Bob has turned us into idiots on occasion. No coincidence from where I am sitting. If you want to be the best, hire the best. If you want less, hire a friend to do it and hope for the best. You won't get it.
