Fastest Vol?

Don't know about his track time ... but ole "orange lightening, Willie Gualt" sure did strick often

I can remember when our entire offense on first, second, and third down was "Willie, go long!". And then we would punt on fourth down.

To mix things up, every now and then, Coach Majors would have us to punt on third down.

In the top-10, what was the sprinter's name we had in the backfield for the '85 Sugar Bowl? He was from the Nashville area.

hasn't Leonard Scott posted a faster time...sub 10 seconds??

I guess Scott is faster by virtue of clock time, but Graddy was world class in the mid eighties. All the records get broken just like the football players get stronger and faster. I'd say Scott wins a race between the two in their prime, but Graddy was once the second fastest man on the planet and I don't think Scott was ever close. Interesting discussion here!

Volnation, I need a little help from the guru's! Having a discussion today with some friends and we were discussing the fastest players ever at our schools. I was just wondering if someone knew who the fastest player to ever don the O&W was/is??

Yes Gault was one of the fastest; however, Nilo Silvan was a return guy who was even faster

very interesting...i was just a pup in the 80's.

I'd rather be 2nd fastest on the planet....but when i think about it, I would also like to be faster than that guy.

so, Yes, a very interesting discussion.

ARNETT!!!!

Sorry, I know it isnt true, but there is no longer an Arnett thread on page one so I had to throw it out there.

BTW and FWIW: This is a great thread. Very cool.

Would be interesting to see how the Fastest Ever at UT stack up against the Fastest Ever at other schools. . . . like say UF.

Not flaming, very cool thread, just thought that would be an interesting comparison.

(too busy working today to do the research on that myself)

Willie Gault, Anthony Hancock, can't remember the 3rd but they all played during same time frame.. They had "World Class Speed". I think they were on a relay team as well.

Anybody remember Billy Williams? IIRC he was a burner too. Was it Johnnie Jones who had that TD run in the 85 Sugar Bowl vs Miami. Every time I see the replay he pulls away from the pack like his rear end was aflame....

Richmond Flowers has to be in the conversation. He was set to run the 120 high hurdles in Mexico City in the 1968 Olympics except he pulled a hamstring.

Did Justin Gatlin ever play on the team? By far the fastest Vol of all time.

I was wrong, Leonard Scott is the answer...

100m
1. *Justin Gatlin 2002 10.05
Leonard Scott 2001 10.05
3. Evander Wells 2008 10.08
Terry Scott 1985 10.08
5. Sam Graddy 1984 10.09
6. Willie Gault 1982 10.10
7. Jeff Phillips 1981 10.11
Mike Miller 1982 10.11
9. Rubin Williams 2008 10.12
10. Sean Lambert 2001 10.17

Thanks for this list ... but it would be cool if we can also dig up times for Hancock, Silvan, and Flowers as has been mentioned, and also ... STANLEY MORGAN!

Great thread, OP. So refreshing to get away from the drama for a change and talk about athletic ability of our current or past actual football players.
