I never played skyrim, but the rest of what you said was a little in another direction. RDR and this are too similar to me. I rented from game fly, missed the start up on the game... once I started playing I had to restart just to make sure it wasn't Rock Star games.

Besides the flowers, treasures, hunting etc. The looting and skinning is identical. jmo

just completed the entire game. i thought it was definitely a 9/10. the hype is correct. this game is sick. lots of different possibilities all the way to the final scene. you can make choices that impact the entire game. side missions are kinda pointless. just grind up enough cash for the best assault rifle then get a site and extended mag. i ran the assault rifle as primary then had a sniper. used a light machine gun for hairy situations. all in all the guns, violence, and fire fights are all really fun. had a blast from start to finish. the story is really riveting and totally worth playing. if you have gamefly rent it. the story mode only isnt really a super long time unless you do all the side quests. so if you can rent it or borrow it you can beat it in about 15 hours total game play.

Rented this last week I couldn't get immersed in it like some other games. Seems like a good game, but I never have been able to get into this series for whatever reason. The same thing happened with me while playing Far Cry 2 several years ago.

I've but about 10 hours into this game so far - here are some thoughts:

1- The comparison to Skyrim is a big stretch; the look and sandbox style is similar but that's about it
2- The game play is basically Assassin's Creed with guns in the first person
3- The main story is fantastic - side quest stuff is shallow and repetitive (AC style)
4- For the love of god - looting bodies is a major pain in the @ss. The game thinks you want to swap weapons every freakin time. They dropped to ball here.
5- Decent game but I wish it had more depth to it
6- The animals are more dangerous than the pirates in this game; I found myself running scared with a pack of dingos or a leopard/tiger is on me
