Fan overreaction

It's all been hashed out over the last 5 days or so but, Tennessee did not get worse over the last 9 months. They are better and likely much better. They had a bad game playing and coaching. It happens.
Probably half of Volnation doesn't remember the actual game but, in 1996 the GOAT Peyton Manning and his team lost to Memphis. Memphis went 4-7 that year (and lost to some other really lower tier teams). Tennessee had already beaten Alabama earlier in the year and came in expecting to coast and was not mentally prepared. I had a friendship with Randy Sanders (Running Backs coach) at the time and he told me that Peyton came off the field and said it looked like everyone was moving in fast-forward and he couldn't make the reads fast enough. Unbelievable!! It happens.
I hope this was our one "mental lapse" for the season and the rest will be full steam ahead.

I thought the same thing having been there for two such games. Memphis likely cost Peyton a Heismann. I also remember losing to Wyoming in similar fashion. There are sunshine pumpers who may be polyannish but know the trolls are unreasonably trigger happy and unrealistic on the negative side.

There are also reasonable but realistic people here who provide memory, context and sanity to the crowd ready to trash any player or coach at the first mistake or sign of adversity. It helps to remember history often repeats itself and human nature is consistent.

We will get better and Butch while having made mistakes has done a phenomenal job rebuilding a broken but proud program. We have a nationally televised record breaking showcase game this week. Butch has tried to save too much gameplan for it. It almost cost him the last game and would have diluted the effect the Battle game will provide. They just have to go there and execute. Just win and polls, pundits and trolls will take care of themselves.

I remember a couple years ago in Butch's first season we played a crappy team (we weren't great either) and barely won. The following week we came out against a highly ranked Georgia team a almost upset them and probably should have won (at least a chance of winning) if not for a Pig Howard fumble that went out the back of the endzone. We brought the house to Georgia after a terrible "win."

All I am saying is watch out VT we comin'...

Funny enough though because Ohio state and Bama fans aren't overreacting because they already knew their teams were awesome and the teams met their expectations.

So people saw us destroy Northwestern and forgot about all the horrible stuff that happened to us last year and over the summer the hype just grew and they forgot that UT really isn't that good.

The NW game made us forget that we prob should have been beaten by uga and uscjr. BUT in both of those games (just like the app st game) we had fortuitous breaks. Uga missing the wide open td, uscjr fumbling in our red zone, and the Hurd fumble recovery. So maybe, just maybe, all of the hard work and attention to detail is making the breaks fall in our favor.

The narrative that we got lucky to beat UGA is just wrong. In that game, we dropped a TD pass and had a fumble at their goal line bounce right to a defender that ran it back 95 yards. How lucky was that?

...and just about every break went against us before the fumble Thursday night. Breaks even out no matter what people think.

I'm shocked Miami was willing to play in Boone, as well. Maybe the Hurricanes wanted to play in front of a larger crowd than they are accustomed to ;)

Our AD did a great job getting Miami to agree to a home and home when they were desperate for an FBS team to fill their schedule. Their fans are just thrilled to be cominig to Boone!

Welcome to Volnation where for 5 years the masses hated a "moral victory" but now celebrate a "moral loss".

It's in a fan's nature to overreact. Look at any message board around the country and you'll see the same thing: incessant pissing and moaning because their team sucks or exuberant jubilation because their team's invincible.

It's amazing to me how much overreaction there is to one game i.e. Northwestern, i.e. Appalachian State. It's not just our fans Va Tech fans were dissing Fuentes in the first half when they were behind. In the Florida State -Ole Miss game in the first half Hugh Freeze was being Bear Bryant, in the second half he was Derek Dooley.....I believe a lot of people really enjoy walking out on the ledge.

A more true statement has never been posted

Ah yes, all those Appy State players running sub 4.4 40's really had me lost just trying to keep up!

Our RB's had trouble turning the corner on ASU due to the speed of their LB's. Against NW it was a breeze. It was speed that was forcing Dobbs out of the pocket and against NW Dobbs was able to just side step a defender. Yes, speed was a very evident factor for the ASU defense.

The ASU defensive linemen were past our linemen before we even knew where they were. I have no clue and do not care what their 4.4 time was but on the field they were a much better speed team than Northwestern. They were completely able to disrupt our offense due to their speed.

What fans? Lol.

Hope you guys beat them, it all sets up pretty good. They just fired their coach so the program is down a bit, will take Richt some time to get em back to relevance. If you guys can completely dominate both lines of scrimmage like you did vs Tennessee and get Kaaya off his spots, you guys have a good chance. He certainly throws the ball better than Dobbs but he's no Deshaun Watson IMO. Good luck in a couple weeks. We'll all be watching and pulling for you.
