It's amazing to me how much overreaction there is to one game i.e. Northwestern, i.e. Appalachian State. It's not just our fans Va Tech fans were dissing Fuentes in the first half when they were behind. In the Florida State -Ole Miss game in the first half Hugh Freeze was being Bear Bryant, in the second half he was Derek Dooley.....I believe a lot of people really enjoy walking out on the ledge.

It's not a coincidence you used the Northwestern and App State games as examples of games that people have overreacted to. They were either the last game for a long time or the first game in a long time. When you have that much time between games people are going to talk and overanalyze because there are no games in the interim. A huge reason expectations were so high to begin with was because of the performance in the bowl game, which was just a single game. If we lost that game, we'd be a preseason top 25 team but not in the top 10 or maybe even the top 15.

My thoughts are that if we played App State the way we did last week but the game was in the middle of the season, and we were undefeated or had lost only to Bama coming into the game, people would have moved on by now. Thinking about the game that way puts it in a different perspective. Since we don't have anything to compare that game to yet, people are going to draw conclusions on limited evidence.

Having said that, they did have 8 months to prepare and looked bad, Dobbs and the offensive line in particular.

Our offense was creative, aggressive and on point against Northwestern. I wish someone would do a play calling comparison between that great showing and the latest turd.

That's right Tennessee had 8 months to prepare for Appy State but Appy State also had 8 months to prepare themselves. What I want to think is Appy State had to throw everything at the Vols to have a chance, Tennessee tried to win being as vanilla as possible on both sides of the ball and it almost bit them. They probably didn't even want to show Malone's abilities in the verticle passing game but had to. Remember I said what I want to think.

The final game of the season so we didn't have to hide any of the playbook from future opponents.

In all seriousness, it was a good long summer of preparation for last week's vanilla --

Welcome to the SEC, where the demands are unreasonable and the women are beautiful. There is no rhyme or reason to how fans will react.........the expectations of an SEC Fan is far above reality and trying to reason with us is basically a waste of time and effort. When the dust settles and the alcohol flushes out of our system, everything will be ok. UT Fans look fairly normal walking down the street, but get them on a blog, Neyland Stadium or at home during College Football and the transformation resembles that of World War Z with Brad Pitt.......it spreads fast and the reaction is violent. Normally this type of Virus subsides in late December once everyone is absolutely sure their team is not going to a bowl or the playoffs...............Zombies Exist!:crazy::crazy::crazy:

Go Vols!!!

There's absolutely no question App State built this game up and threw everything they had at Tennessee. A highly motivated but less talented team is always dangerous against a more talented team that sees the game simply as another one on the schedule. It is likely the biggest game App will play in all year (although they do get Miami at home - as an aside, what the hell is Miami thinking?).

I don't know if it actually did or not, but "vanilla" should have gone out the window after halftime. I understand not wanting to show your cards, but we were down 13-3 against a Sun Belt team at home. Doesn't the realization hit you that you shouldn't really hold back at that point, especially when this is Butch's 4th year and there probably isn't a whole lot other teams don't know about our tendencies anyway?

It's all been hashed out over the last 5 days or so but, Tennessee did not get worse over the last 9 months. They are better and likely much better. They had a bad game playing and coaching. It happens.
Probably half of Volnation doesn't remember the actual game but, in 1996 the GOAT Peyton Manning and his team lost to Memphis. Memphis went 4-7 that year (and lost to some other really lower tier teams). Tennessee had already beaten Alabama earlier in the year and came in expecting to coast and was not mentally prepared. I had a friendship with Randy Sanders (Running Backs coach) at the time and he told me that Peyton came off the field and said it looked like everyone was moving in fast-forward and he couldn't make the reads fast enough. Unbelievable!! It happens.
I hope this was our one "mental lapse" for the season and the rest will be full steam ahead.

I'm shocked Miami was willing to play in Boone, as well. Maybe the Hurricanes wanted to play in front of a larger crowd than they are accustomed to ;)

The difference between ASU and Northwestern is speed. We look like champions when we play slow Big 10 teams. But very average against better competition.

Hoping that we were looking ahead and it really looked like the offense was handcuffed.

The game plan seemed to be run, run, run, run, run, run, screen pass, run, short pass.

What was missing? QB scramble, toss/jet sweep, creative pass routes, reverses, deep threat, 2 tight end formations.

I beg to differ that appy state is a superior team than Northwestern in terms of speed.

Our players went from the "OWN IT" motto to a "BLOWN IT" motto. This staff did not do anything fancy. They simply thought they could run base schemes and our superior athletes would out muscle then manhandle the smaller Appy St. players. Our players were not focused on Appy St....IMHO they were thinking they were already 3-0 and waiting for Florida to come to town.

Appy St. on the other hand is a solid club Top 10 rankings in offense/defense nationally last year. They came to make a statement and nearly did. This staff gave Appy. St. nearly 3 1/2 quarters of the 4th quarters of the Florida/Oklahoma games. They made it real easy for Appy St.'s staff.

I have rolled with lesser belts in BJJ...and thought I will toy with them or take it easy and have that relaxed nothing is gonna happen because I'm way more experienced....then before I know it I'm in deep waters with someone trying to make a statement with me. You can never take an opponent lightly....EVER. We saw this team lead Florida, Oklahoma, and Alabama deep into the 4th quarters last year...a year younger team lead the SEC East Champs, SEC/National Champions, and the Big 12 Conference champs....2 playoff teams in deep trouble....do you think this team really forgot how to play football? They just forgot to mentally show up....upset city everywhere Saturday to lesser opponents...we just found a way to save the season.

Did you not watch Tenn v Bama last year?

There is hardly a better measuring stick, currently.

Funny enough though because Ohio state and Bama fans aren't overreacting because they already knew their teams were awesome and the teams met their expectations.

So people saw us destroy Northwestern and forgot about all the horrible stuff that happened to us last year and over the summer the hype just grew and they forgot that UT really isn't that good.

Ah yes, all those Appy State players running sub 4.4 40's really had me lost just trying to keep up!

It's called being a fan, as in fanatic. Look at 1998. That whole year was a roller coaster ride. From Syracuse to praying for a missed FG against Florida. Jamal Lewis' injury. A number 1 ranking. Fate handing us the Arky game when we sucked the entire game. Cutcliffe leaving. Looking like crap in the SEC championship game.

We're supposed to overreact. Sometimes several times a game.

Those would all seem to be reasons not to overreact. As Tennessee fans, we've all been through this stuff before.

In 2007, We got drilled by Florida 59-20, and to Bama by about 41-17 in Saban's first year. And yet, we played LSU for the SEC title in spite of that.

Our previous year in 2006, we had a more talented team that lost by 1 pt to eventual national champions Florida and stomped #9 Cal - yet, no SEC title game appearance.

Fans in general, have this stupid idea that football is supposed to make sense all the time - which is not even close to the truth.
