fallout from pearl's firing

From the article posted above, I found the bolded part to be interesting.

"So if coach Pearl isn't still here, and there isn't a new coach, and you don't know about the NCAA infractions, you have a really short window to decide,'' Torrel Harris said. "You don't want to transfer and sit out a year, so we don't really have any choice left but to go pro if Bruce isn't there any more.''

So, you're saying if there is a coach hired before Tobias has to declare, he might reconsider leaving. He'll go in next year's draft, for sure, so why not put his name in the draft this year, anyways? He can still withdraw.

The deadline to declare for the draft is sometime in late April. I highly doubt we'd go that long without hiring a coach.

Exactly. This is simply Torrel posturing. He apparently thinks Tobias staying for one more year could help Pearl keep his job.

I love this passive aggressive bullshat on the part of both Harris and Hopson. Rip the bandaid off and move on.

I do not blame them for being unsure at this point. They are both young kids with a tough decision to make. A few of these articles seem to be misleading, especially with their headline. I have seen quotes from Hopson to suggest that he will be patient and see who is hired. Tobias comments seem a lot different than those of his father.

Hopson will stay because he will find out he will not get drafted if he goes this year. Tobias should stay one more year but will probably get drafted if he goes, therefore, he will go. If we get a good hire for coach the current players who have said they are coming to UT will still come because they will be playing for a good coach and not have to sit out a year. It would make more sense to honor you LOI and not sit out a year if a good coach is hired at UT however, you never know with these kids because they have a different value system then what I grew up with. Your word doesn't mean much anymore. It is a shame but that is the way it is. Lets get a good honest coach and pay what is necessary. The move will end up paying for itself in the long run.

hamilton should not be granted the opportunity to hire a new coach.

i agree that mh should be the first one canned! If we keep bp , good, if we don't i'm sorry because i liked him but am very disappointed with the things he did! Go vols, we will get it back! :

Here's a conspiracy theory for you...

The UT Administration decides to get rid of Bruce Pearl (can't really blame them). But, they are afraid of a potential firestorm that could follow his firing, especially if/when we play Buzz Ball for a few years. So, they invent a story about the NCAA penalizing Tennessee to the nth degree if we keep Bruce. Next, they unofficially leak the story out to a few people that they know will spread it to the media to make it look like UT had no choice.

If the NCAA really threatened UT with much tougher sanctions by keeping Bruce, let's see Cheek/Hamilton say it in a press conference. If these rumors are fiction, UT Admin knows they can't make any such claim in public, and their lie would be as big as anyone Bruce ever told. If pending NCAA sanctions with Bruce are true, they have nothing to hide and should announce it publicly.

No it isn't. You get a solid coach the team goes on. The new coach will bring in his recruits. With Pearl gone, the NCAA sanctions will be almost nothing. A good coach and will be fine.

i disagree if pearl is fired we still lose a scolership or two and get a one year post season ban

Here's a simple way to debunk your theory. Research what has happenned to coaches charged with unethical conduct. Fact is greater than fiction.

If you want to see what happens when you fire a coach.. See UT football. Instability sucks. Keeping Pearl the variables are known. Fire him and they are unknown. How many coaches and years do we go thru before we find the right guy ? Who knows... How about if we keep Pearl ? 1 to 2 years. Odds are you recover quicker with Pearl, and this goes away before we get to this level of BBall again.... It is a tough call though...

no doubt we would be better off with pearl in the long run. but it's just not gonna happen. ut can't let him stay.

Why would we be better off with Pearl in the long run? He's facing at least a one season ban and there is no way to tell what damage this will do to his ability to recruit. He asked a recruit and his dad to lie. I don't see that sitting so well with the parents of future recruits. Personally, I think we do much better cutting ties now and moving on.

So UT makes it to 6 straight NCAA tournaments with one guy as coach. So now we are so haughty taughty that we couldn't trade in a year of two of sucky. Hell, UT bball has been about 70 years or more of suck. I say let him clean his mess up. If he can't, boot him out the door. Other than this year's crappy team, his out put has been far better than anyone else has in UT basketball in ever. Yes that's right, in ever.

aw go correct yourself... if the farthest we ever went in the big dance was the elite 8 and pearl got us there.... then to date he has been the most successful coach in ut history. Sorry, he got us the closest to a championship in the big tournament.... So go correct your kids or pet rock or whatever because there is none needed here.
