So the living room carpet is finally needing replacement at my house. And i really think that hardwood floors would be nice in there. So i went down to Lowes to check them out and the Lowes guy was really really pushing me to look into the Pergo Flooring. They are laminate tops that to me almost looks identical to real hardwood. I do have a dog that lives indoors and he said that the Pergo is almost scratchproof. Has anyone here had this? Any suggestions would be great!

My barroom is pergo, I'm a fan. Easy as hello to clean, and I can vouch for it being extremely scratch resistant.

Easy to install as well.

Great. The seams are water tight, and the material is non absorbing. It doesn't look as nice as wood, but its passable, and the durability/ease of cleaning/price make it a no brainer.

I have pergo in my kitchen and hallways. Has stood up great. I agree with JTrain, the only knock I have on it is that it doesn't look as good as hardwood.

"fake" is the way to go. Very resistant to scratches, scares, dings, nicks, ect. Real absolutely, positively sucks. period. Have it in my kitchen and every time I drop something it dents it in some fashion and its not worth the time and hassle to put it in.

Pergo or really any "engineered" hardwood floors are the way to go. Very good for resale as well. I have them throughout my house except in the bedrooms. Very durable, I have a golden ret and lab that stay indoors and no scratches.

Love pergo. Are you in knoxville? I can pm you a floor guy who does good work. Don't use lowes, you can get a better price and service.

Check out vintagepineflooring.com- I put down 2800 sq ft of 3/4 hardwood downstairs and 1000 sq ft of engineered up stairs and it looks wonderful and rustic.

They shipped it all to my new house saving 1000's of dollars

If you do it yourself, be prepared to stock up on skilsaw blades.

Pine is not a hardwood. Interesting.

Wow guys, thanks for all the great feedback! Ya i'll be doing this myself so luckily i won't have to deal with any services. And OrangeVol i will definately check out that site. Looks like they have wayyyy better prices than Lowes did. And also i was just planning on using my circular saw but if you guys think a jig saw would do better, i may just try it. Luckily the area i am looking at is on about 400 sq ft with not a whole lot of specialty cuts.

And for those of you that have it, do you guys think light wood color or dark wood color is best?

My dog has black hair so i am afraid that may show up if i go to light. But going with the lighter color would brighten the room. (this is my living room btw)

I have a dark mahogany type color, in retrospect I might have gone for something more in the middle as far as tone, to lighten things up

I think darker colors are 'richer'. But if lighting is an issue, go with a middle of the road color.

HGTV?:)

Good advice tho. I love the darker colored wood, but went with a gunstock color. Really enjoy it, installed myself.

I can't see paying someone to do it, once you get the hang of it (5 mins) it goes fast. I was measuring and cutting, wife snapping it together.

I have pergo laminate in my living room/hall bedroom and love it. I installed laminate in a rec room myself and it was super easy.

No matter what saw you use, MAKE SURE IT IS STRAIGHT.

Big key is the pading. Moisture barrier/soundproof. Some have them on the bottom already and some dont. Don't be cheap if you are doing a living/bedroom. It will make noise.

I have two dogs, the laminate is scratch and water resistant. Easy to clean. Just sweep up the hair and swifter sweep.

Nowadays dark wood is the "in" thing. If it matters do what you like best but think long term/budget
