Faizon Brandon Has to be coming in as true freshman starter no doubt.

Fans should temper their expectations next year. Freshman QBs take time to develop. Rarely do they come in and just take over college football. I tried to tell Michigan fans that coming into this season and none of them were having it. But just look at Bryce Underwood stats now 7 Passing TDs and 3 INTs.

With that said, I've been extremely impressed with how George Macintyre has looked in every opportunity he has been given. What impresses me the most is how he manuevers in the pocket and evades pressure. He looks really calm and unfazed. Considering Faizon will be a true freshman, I think you have to start G-Mac, bring in a one year rental in an experienced QB, and redshirt Faizon.

Simply not gonna happen. Heup doesn't start true freshmen. And true freshmen are not able to run his offense. G-Mac will be the guy next year, unless Josh goes for another portal veteran. And hopefully George understands the playbook more than Nico did.
Heupel has to go to the portal if Merk transfers. We can't go into a season with just G-Mac and Faizon.

The question is does Heupel go for a steady backup guy and G-Mac as the starter or does Heupel look for someone with starter potential?

To me, you have to go after the best QB you can possibly get BUT does that lead to G-Mac waving bye bye?

If you just get a steady hand backup QB and G-Mac really isn't the guy, next season looks rough unless Faizon is that rare kid who is a true FR starter in the SEC.

Agree...he goes to the portal regardless. You made the point I was trying to when i mentioned going after a portal "veteran qb"...I think that depends on how G-Mac has absorbed the offense. There seems to be potential there, from the small sample size.

I think Merk is gone regardless. Everyone who watched practice during preseason said he struggled. And we've all seen that in his limited playing time this year. 2 years into the system, if it hasn't clicked its probably not going to.

The risk is if he gets a "veteran placeholder" and G-Mac isn't as developed as Heupel thinks, we're looking at a very rough year without a QB we really can trust.

The other side of the risk is if he gets a "splash QB" from the portal, he's undercutting G-Mac's confidence and possibly nudging him toward the portal.

If he were to land a younger but talented enough "splash QB" we might get back on track and get 2 years from him and have Faizon take over as a RS Sophomore. That's the best case

If we finish 7-5, I think he has to go get a transfer to start next year. Not sure he will have the capital to ride out a year with a true freshman taking his lumps against a much tougher schedule if this year turns into a collapse.
His capital looks pretty strong to me. I think he's good for at least several more years of the fans dreaming about eaking out 10 wins and 'making' the playoff. Then we may get serious and look for a winning coach.

No to the portal qb. Didn't help this year, won't help next yr except to force one of our qb to enter portal.

Redshirt Faison and go with our 2 young stud qb's

If you can’t get a QB ready to play by the time he’s a sophomore with a full year in the program under his belt, I question your expertise. Not saying he’s going to be fully developed, but you’re not going to have the luxury of constantly starting an upperclassman at QB in today’s college football. If a kid can play, he’ll be able to give you something as a sophomore.

Given Heupel's QB history, fans can't help but question the evals and development. Kinda depressing.

Right now Heupel is 2-2 with Qb's. He done good with Hooker and Joey. Milton and Nico not so much but recruiting is never 100% accurate. They may have had the book knowledge of the playbook but couldn't execute on the field in game time. Hazel though is the QB coach and he hasn't impressed with the development. I'd say he's 1-2 with the development on the 3 QBs he's had. We will see next year though if we don't get one through the portal.

He did good with Milton. I think CJH play calling regressed some that year, majority just side line screens and WR that wouldn't catch the ball I still can't believe after we had just scored on Bama before the half and leading, came out, D gave up a quick TD(I know the guy was held), offense went 3 and out and after that, play calling went away from what was getting us points in the first half.
Milton is also QB2 in the NFL and has thrown some TD's in the NFL. Coach can always use that as a talking point for recruiting QB's

Lot of opinions on what's best for QB next season and all have good points. Will be shocked if Merk stays.

Not sure what portal QB you all are wanting. Another one and done Joey or a 2 yr guy? IMO either on creates a problem in the QB room. Gmack may not want to stay if a portal guy comes in and a more than one yr QB may make Brandon leave. A 5* guy like him can easily get picked up.

I would not risk a portal guy. Not sure what our receiving corp is going to look like next yr either.
