He may not start the 1st game, but remember Tyler Bray came in the SCe game. His 1st pass was a pick 6. He got it together and brought us back with over 300 yes passing that game and almost won it. A freshman can start. It will help if he's an early enrollment. It gives him a head start on the season and will allow him to get more comfortable with the system. Heupel may have a package just for him. Plays and situations that he's more comfortable with.Fans should temper their expectations next year. Freshman QBs take time to develop. Rarely do they come in and just take over college football. I tried to tell Michigan fans that coming into this season and none of them were having it. But just look at Bryce Underwood stats now 7 Passing TDs and 3 INTs.
With that said, I've been extremely impressed with how George Macintyre has looked in every opportunity he has been given. What impresses me the most is how he manuevers in the pocket and evades pressure. He looks really calm and unfazed. Considering Faizon will be a true freshman, I think you have to start G-Mac, bring in a one year rental in an experienced QB, and redshirt Faizon.
How did Heupel write him off? He got beat out. He's still 2nd string and played more than he should have against UAB, to the detriment of getting GMac playing time.Heuple seemed to write Merk off after spring practice. Guess we'll never know if it was Heupel's inability to develop him or he just decided Merk was not an SEC level QB. Whatever the real reason looks like Merks best option is somewhere else.
Going to be interesting what direction Heuple goes with the QB situation for next yr.
Austin Price says Merk will transfer after the season, I think he will to try and find a school to start at, and the arm chair coaches on here turned it into CJH has written him off. I think Merk staying is what is best for the program and believe CJH would want him to stay as well but as other posters have stated it is unlikely he ever starts here so transferring may be best for him.How did Heupel write him off? Heupel recruits scared. It’s the reason Boo wasn’t dismissed despite overwhelming push from the player counsel. He’s gone anyway. It’s why he didn’t cut Nico lose after last season and let him nearly shipwreck the whole thing. He won’t go after a QB that will upset the apple cart for Faizon or Gmac. There's no guarantee Faizon Brandon steps on campus as QB2.
When Heupel goes to the portal, which he will do when Merk leaves, we have no idea if he'll seek a known QB who can be an SEC starter or a QB who is comfortable being a "career backup."
We simply don't know who Heupel might have an eye on or have had some back channel (don't call it tampering) contact with. For all we know the next Joe Burrow may be sitting at another school waiting to transfer to UT.
What will determine if Faizon redshirts will be how quickly he develops into an SEC QB in Josh Heupel's system.
It's unlikely G-Mac rolls over for a new transfer or Faizon in an open competition.

Call it what you want but he got beat out by a QB that had never run a down of this offense before fall practice that Heuple brought in for competition. Not a good look for Merk. And your post about him playing to the detriment of GMac is not a good look for him either. How did Heupel write him off? He got beat out. We already have a career backup in Phillips. Likely capable of playing in a pinch and managing a series or two. But never a starter. There's no guarantee Faizon Brandon steps on campus as QB2.

I didn't say anything. Your claim that he recruits scared is without a clue because you know nothing about it. Zilch. You said that he either recruits one WB or the other. I’m saying there’s zero chance he recruits a legit SEC starter level QB. Barring GMac leaving or Faizon not signing. Place a bet?
While I'm glad the young man gets to be a Vol, I'm not certain he's in the backup category. We already have a career backup in Phillips. Likely capable of playing in a pinch and managing a series or two. But never a starter.
While I'm not a betting man, we don't know who might be available in the portal yet. Someone Heupel recruited previously or has watched or knows is a great fit might jump in the portal. You said that he either recruits one WB or the other.
