You all do know Faizon graduates early and will be on campus in December, right? He could possibly dress for a bowl game depending on when it is.

Considering Faizon will be a true freshman, I think you have to start G-Mac, bring in a one year rental in an experienced QB, and redshirt Faizon.

He may not start the 1st game, but remember Tyler Bray came in the SCe game. His 1st pass was a pick 6. He got it together and brought us back with over 300 yes passing that game and almost won it. A freshman can start. It will help if he's an early enrollment. It gives him a head start on the season and will allow him to get more comfortable with the system. Heupel may have a package just for him. Plays and situations that he's more comfortable with.

How did Heupel write him off? He got beat out. He's still 2nd string and played more than he should have against UAB, to the detriment of getting GMac playing time.

Austin Price says Merk will transfer after the season, I think he will to try and find a school to start at, and the arm chair coaches on here turned it into CJH has written him off. I think Merk staying is what is best for the program and believe CJH would want him to stay as well but as other posters have stated it is unlikely he ever starts here so transferring may be best for him.

Heupel recruits scared. It’s the reason Boo wasn’t dismissed despite overwhelming push from the player counsel. He’s gone anyway. It’s why he didn’t cut Nico lose after last season and let him nearly shipwreck the whole thing. He won’t go after a QB that will upset the apple cart for Faizon or Gmac.

Call it what you want but he got beat out by a QB that had never run a down of this offense before fall practice that Heuple brought in for competition. Not a good look for Merk. And your post about him playing to the detriment of GMac is not a good look for him either.

Not trashing him but the writing is on the wall for him here, he needs to transfer after this season to get a starting opportunity.

We already have a career backup in Phillips. Likely capable of playing in a pinch and managing a series or two. But never a starter.

While I'm glad the young man gets to be a Vol, I'm not certain he's in the backup category.

Politely, if you don't see reps of them from Fingers, they aren't really backup QBs.

While I'm not a betting man, we don't know who might be available in the portal yet. Someone Heupel recruited previously or has watched or knows is a great fit might jump in the portal.

With the portal these days you just never know.
