They were talking about fair weather fans on "Three hour lunch" today and thought it would be interesting to see what everyone here thought about our fan base.

Clay Travis is a writer who represents UT pretty well and said his top 3 would be Notre Dame, Alabama, and Kentucky (basketball)

I must say I've never seen so many Bama fans around here until they started winning a couple years ago. But, I must question our fans. Several years ago we would sell out Neyland and last time Bama came to Knoxville they filled our stadium 1/3 of the way.

I hate to say this, but I would put our fan base top 5

I disagree with those top 3 completely. ND fans were still in full force in that stadium over the last couple of years. And I honestly think UK and bammer fans are legit in terms of loyalty. Florida basketball fans are as fair weather as it gets.

Yeh I was at that Bama game last year at Neyland and it was embaressing how many fans filled up the stadium. I drove 6 hrs for that game to experiance a little good ol' vol spirit from knoxville and I left very furious because all i heard all night downtown was bama fans chirpn and cheering. But I believe that we have to have the top 5 best fans. I think West Virginia and as much as it kills me to say, Ohio state should b on that list as well. The SEC fans should be in a category on there own, because I dont think anyone does it like we do, not even close.

I think the OP is speaking in terms of, "these are the programs that attract a lot fair weather fans, therefore, a lot of their fans must be fair weather fans."

and I agree about UK bball and Bama, but not so much ND, b/c they've been through some tough years as of late.

Bama expanded their stadium in 2006 to 92,000 at the tail end of the worst decade in Bama history, and long before they ever fired Shula or knew Saban was coming....and still had a waiting list for season tickets.

Hard to call Bama or Kentucky fans "fair weather"....they just demand results, and continue to show up while doing so. Bandwagoners are an entirely different story, but it doesn't quite equal fair weather.

You want fair weather fans? Check out Miami or So. Cal.

You can't really go on that one game alone. Tickets for a rivalry game are so expensive and its hard to shell out several hundred bucks a ticket when the team you pull for is a huge underdog. Plus Bama was on a winning streak their fan base hadn't seen in a while so any online ticket was being bought by them instead of us.

Top 5 your crazy. When Fulmer ran the program into the ground, you know what happened people still went to the games because from what I have seen in my 22 years of my fanhood this is a group, who might always agree with whats going on but still shows up. For rivals or not this group of fans is very loyal and maybe I am just saying that because I am a Vol fan. I live in GA and were ever I go I see UT fans, UF fans on the other hand and Bama fans came out of thier houses and jumped on the wagon when their teams started winning again.

That is the absolute worst top three I have ever heard of for being fair weather fans. In truth, I would say that those three are probably three of the most loyal fan bases around.

I would agree with this post.

We have top 10 attendance in seasons where we have a losing record. I think that speaks well of our fan base. USC has people wearing their apparel all over the country in droves yet they can't fill their stadium. That's fair-weather.

I agree somewhat with the original post. I have never seen as much Bama apparel here in Middle TN as I have since they won the title. not sure if it is really fair weather fans or bandwagon riders. Vanderbilt has to be in the top 10 of fairweather fans though. Nobody admits to being a Vandy fan until they have a winning season. Then Nashville is decked in black and gold. Thank God it does not happen often.

But if you think about it, if the stadium was always filled with fans blindly following win or lose, CPF would still be here.

after the longhorns lose, most of their fans go back to watching their favorite Copa America team, or rededicate themselves to following the Spurs.

afterall, you can easily purchase t-shirts for all three at most Wal Marts and Pilot gas stations.

There will always be losers seeking to latch onto something that they hope will make them feel like winners, as if low self-esteem can be cured with a Bama sweatshirt.

Biggest Fair Weather Fans in SEC Football:

Florida
Georgia
LSU

Tennessee has its share as you can see from the lack of activity on this board lately. But places like Tennessee and Alabama are institutions and have a die-hard fan base - yes there are some fair weather fans but it's not a very high percentage.

Until the SEC Championship game this year, I've never seen so many Florida gator flags and stickers on cars. By far the last few years at least in the Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City areas, the gator bandwagon has been full. You usually dont see much KY stuff until basketball season, and rightfully so.

I live in NC and it doesn't get more fair weather and band wagon than Carolina and Duke. So many fans are only fans when the team is in the sweet 16. They often know more about the tennis teams than their football but I can't blame them on that. Also Miami but they've been bad long enough that it's hard to notice. The king of kings in sports is the Yankees or cowboys, their fan bases quadruple when they do well!
