Failed to address two of Jones glaring weaknesses

1) game management- they hired someone who’s never been a head coach. We have no clue how he’ll react in the last minute in Gainesville. The last guy flunked the test TWICE.
2) developing talent- Bama has a line of 5 star guys. If one fails, another steps up. Tennessee isn’t at that level yet. We don’t know how he’ll deal with low 4 and 3 star guys. Don’t kid yourself thinking he’ll recruit like Saban right now. The Vol brand is tarnished some. It will take some winning early to get it back.

1) I don't think HC experience is required for this sort of thing. The guy has been around the block a few times, he's seen 2 minute drills in action, I suspect he'll be fine in these situations. But none of us really knows so I'd list this as TBD.

2) Butch brought in top 15 classes consistently but didn't develop the talent. The only thing that proves is that players aren't just good because of their rating, they need a coach, so yeah I'll go with the proven DC whose defense is ranked 2nd overall.

People are overreacting to this hire. We've done well, anyone saying they know the guy will fail or be successful is FoS. Just relax, what vol nation has accomplished is going to be talked about for a long time. Also worth noting that a budget of 5m for staff is incredible, he's going to be given the chance to succeed, we just have to be patient.

Found this article on Gridiron Now which addresses your second question.

"In 2013, Jimbo Fisher hired the then-Alabama secondary coach away from Tuscaloosa and made him Florida State’s defensive coordinator. The Seminoles returned just four starters from a Mark Stoops-led defense that was second nationally in total defense and sixth in scoring defense.

That year, Pruitt showed he could develop top-notch talent. FSU ranked first in scoring defense and third in total defense en route to a 14-0 national championship season.

The first-year coordinator changed the Seminoles’ entire defensive scheme, bringing far more blitzes and putting players in positions to make big plays – something they hadn’t done well under Stoops.
The Seminoles’ defense ranked second nationally in turnovers forced (35) in 2013, up from 66th in 2012 (21).

Eleven players from that FSU defense would later be drafted into the NFL, with nine being selected in the first three rounds.'

Also,

"After only one year in Tallahassee, Pruitt left to take the same job at Georgia. But the challenge was much different.

The Bulldogs’ defense was a mess and while it had good players, the overall talent level was inferior to the FSU defense he walked away from.

During his two years in Athens, Pruitt showed that he could rebuild.

Under Todd Grantham in 2013, Georgia ranked 45th in total defense, 78th in scoring defense and 60th in passing defense. During Pruitt’s first season in Athens, his unit was 17th in total defense, 16th in scoring defense and fifth in passing defense. The following year, the Dawgs were seventh in total defense, eighth in scoring defense and first in passing defense."

Jones had HC experience and was a horrible game manager.

In most of our games under Butch clock management didn't matter. The only time we needed to call a time out was when our defense needed a rest.

Good GOD man.....Look at the coaches that had never been a HC.....Fulmer...Spurrier....Mullins....(and I could list more)....You are the PROBLEM....Give him a CHANCE.....Or maybe, Fulmer will let you be the HC....SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A STRONG BACKGROUND IN COACHING....

Only a couple of coaches would have checked all the boxes...Saban and Meyer. And come to think of it, one is getting up there in years and the other has health issues.

There are no sure things wrt a HC hire. About the surest thing going for us is the fact that we're OVERDUE making a quality hire. Maybe this is it finally..

If we are up big and their offense can not move the ball what difference does the last 2 min. make make. Just win the damn game. Come on coach Pruitt, bring defense back to the Vols. We have not had really god defense in 5-8 years.

I do not put a lot of value in the difference between a 4 and a 5 star prospect. Perhaps between a 1 or 2 and 3 and up.

There has been a lot of noise on this hire concerning our talent level. One thing Jones was good at was recruiting and the incoming coach has a roster of star players on both sides of the ball. Also do not forget that Tennessee was crazy depleted due to injuries this year. I consider that partially a failure on the outgoing coaching staff. Sure some injuries are not related to conditioning and technique, but most were potentially not.

Some will immediately throw out the "but a program like Alabama filled with 5 star recruits does not have this problem". I say hogwash. They lost their last game partially due to depleted roster. With a month to recuperate I believe they will win the NC and the great new is our coach will be a part of that.

Having a HC and recruiter that has a recent history of NC's will be huge on the recruiting task. Remember this prediction, in the next three weeks we will land recommits and some huge new commits.

It doesn't matter what coach does, we don't have many Dlineman period. Butch didn't bring any in the last couple of years and it will take years to fix that. Our best 2 tackles. Shy can barely walk. And I Mac has a bad back. We are in a world of hurt. O and our Lbs are much better.

And don’t forget “he’s a Bammer so we don’t want him” even though he’s one of the top 5 coordinators in college football and probably has had more success than any of them.

yikes. year one transition is tough.

i'd like to think we're capable of more than that though.

That's a worst-case scenario. I'd like to think we can beat the likes of Mizzou, Kentucky, and Vandy next year. But I'm not totally convinced, and we open the season with what should be a very tough neutral site OOC game against West Virginia. Auburn is our rotating West opponent. It won't be easy.

another Bama Assist we hired was worse- Doolittle. But, I trust Phil to get it right.

Doolander wasn't a Bama assistant but was a Sabanite. The head coaching track record of Saban assistants is spotty. Some have done well, others have not.

no, the schedule is tough, i agree.

but these guys didn't come here to slow dance. i think expectations should be tempered for year 1, sure.

but can we maybe win a game or two we maybe might not be expected? WVU? UF?

and for crying out loud...beat Vandy and USCe. you get 7/8 wins and those are 4 of the victories....yeah, i'd be feeling pretty good about year 1.

This is true. In trying to think of a player under Jones whose career outperformed his star rating as a high school recruit, Derek Barnett is all I can come up with.

Sutton, JRM, Kelly, OL Wiseman were a few but I agree there aren’t many. And a lot of higher rated guys not progressing like they should.

I didn’t mean the OP as negative on Pruitt but some criticism of the hire by Fulmer. I can live with Pruitt but truth is we don’t have a clue how he’ll react in those situations (I think he will be better in player development regardless) and those were the two most critical reasons, IMO, Jones failed here.
