Gimmick? It's not functional, but it looks cool. Pretty much the same thing as those tiny little wrist bands virtually every player wears.

Texas Tech didn't invent it. I don't care if their fans did it. Kevin Randleman was a bad man and he was the first player I saw do it. Nobody thinks this will make you a better player, but it pumps up the fans. Kind of like playing Rocky Top.

Its football not pro wrestling.

I agree. Face painting, whether for fans or players, is rather douchey. I remember playing against guys (both high school and college) that painted their faces. We talked so much sheet to them that they tried to get it wiped off by the end of the game. And how in the hell is it supposed to fire up the crowd if we can't see it (the players that would need to do it , i.e. our best players, would be wearing helmets, preventing us from seeing it). Face paint=Pathetic. Not at all like playing Rocky Top, either.
