ESPN.com is doing a little user content battle of the Faces of all the Division 1 Football Teams.

You can check it out here: ESPN: Face of the Program

With the offseason in full swing I figured it would be something to discuss here to get the juices flowing heading into the 2008 season. Something of substance besides dreams and colors of uniforms.

The cool thing about it is that it is not boiled down to an actual face but when someones says, "Tennessee Football", what is the first thing that pops into your head. Anything goes be that Smokey, Davy Crockett, Vol Navy, etc..

After thinking for a little bit my answer was this:

neyland.jpg

It was hard between him and Peyton but without Neyland there possibly isn't Peyton.

Discuss.

Without a doubt, it would be our school colors. When you say the teams wears orange, nobody thinks of Texas, Syracuse or any other school that has orange as a school color. When you say orange it's only one team- the Big Orange, Go Vols

Looks like ESPN needs to clean up how you answer the question. Bama fans have taken over the answering and all you can see are Phil jokes.

My answer would probably be orange as well. Outside the Big XII, 125 is right. When people think of Tennessee they think "all that orange". I'd like to put Neyland up there as well with Neyland's Maxims, Neyland Stadium, Neyland dogs, not to mention his accomplishments as coach. But outside the fanbase, I think the colors, Rocky Top and Peyton Manning stand head and shoulders above everything else.

I feel you on that. I just love some Neyland and the standard of excellence he put into the program.

Gen Neyland is great for us VOL fans, but outside of our fan base he isn't known particularly well. I think for a representation of our program to register with the masses it would have to be more current. Peyton is definitely the most recognizable player we have at the moment.

While not a player, "Rocky Top" is probably the single most recognizable term related to our program. The color orange is signature too.

My vision is orange and the sounds running through my head are Rocky Top and John Ward.

I think of going to Neyland Stadium on Saturday watching the Vol walk and the band coming down playing Rocky Top. I also think of the first time I took my daughter to witness the rich Tennessee tradition and now her blood runs orange as well. Thats what comes to
mind when I think about Tennessee.

I think of Neyland Stadium and "running through the T"...everyone I have ever talked to (including other teams' fans) think that it is pretty incredible.

Don't know how it could be otherwise at this point. He's either your hero, or the reason that UTK is one season away from 10 years without an SEC championship, or both.

For the average football fan across the country I'd think the recognition ranks like this,,,,,

Peyton Manning
Checkerboard Endzones
Rockytop Fightsong
Phillip Fulmer
Smokey

For many maybe the TN/ALA rivalry should be in the mix.

I read through the comments on ESPN. A bunch of gators were being their asisnine selves.

I couldn't decide if UF would be best represented by the player using the dead girl's credit card (they could make a collage out of all 92 security camera snapshots) or a video of the two players going after each other with steak knives at a Sugar Bowl banquet during Spurrier's tenure.
