Cole Cubelic on Friday night SEC Now said Tennessee fans do not have reasonable expectations for the program. Honest question, Can someone tell me why these people keep saying this when we are rarely even having 9 win seasons? I don’t hear or see anyone honestly saying We should be beating Bama every year. Being at least competitive with top teams is all I ever hear or read. Do these guys have access to the boosters who ruined this program to hear this stuff?

Who? And why should we care?

What’s unrealistic? Beating Kentucky? How bout Arkansas? Georgia State?

Ask this nobody how low we should set our expectations bc I’m fairly sure Pruitt can underachieve still.

I guess he's right. I no longer expect a good administration, a good coaching search, a good coach or a good team. Apathy is a B***h.

Exactly. Do they not see the money that gets invested by boosters AND the fans? We are getting beat by some programs who have seriously lacking facilities and rarely sell out in their history.

I used to have high expectations for Tennessee football. Now I expect them to be unwatchable every year, a terrible coach producing a terrible team. Then the coach eventually gets fired, and Tennessee will make more terrible decisions and terrible hires, extend said terrible coaches, and on and on.

With an average coach, 8-4 is a reasonable baseline. If you have some stuff align, you can win the East. If you have to rebuild, the low end is a bowl team.

If you have better than an average coach, competing for thr SEC (and potentially a playoff spot) is realistic if stuff aligns properly.

I heard this with Florida. What kills me is these statements are always when a program is at rock bottom, as if you can’t do better than rock bottom.

It’s not like Tennessee is 9-3 and can’t get over the hump. They continue to be sub .500.

This fan base would kill to have the Mark Richt problem

His alumnus just slapped the s*** out of us, so he‘s obviously enjoying our current sad state. Just another rival school homer who joined the network. Wouldn’t take anything he says to heart.

Cubelic has been pretty complimentary to our program. Despite SEC Now being a highlight reel for other teams beating TN for last few years this is first time I’ve heard him say that. Only the former FL receiver on the show Says anything negative after ridiculous losses and he’s too concerned with FL.

I’ll admit I haven’t watched him that much, but it does seem a bit timely that he says this after Auburn drummed us. I’m just tired of these analysts talking down to us like we’re impatient hillbillies, when we actually just want our team and program to go back to being good and watchable.

Truth is, vol fans fully know what to expect from a Tennessee team and there in lies the problem.
Fans expect Tennessee to lose most games and Tennessee accommodates the fans more often than not:(

Consistent improvement. That’s what I expect. I expect our offense to get better every game. I expect our defense to get better every game. I expect our senior kicker to get better every game.

I haven’t seen any of that in a long time and it’s sickening. The only consistency seen is inconsistency.

The 1998 NC ruined UT, the expectations from that day destroyed reality for Tennessee football. I love the Big Orange, but I noticed the fan base turned on the school. Its is MY opinion, that prior to CPF, that UT is that kind of program. I am quilty of all the above. Tennessee is just not the school to attract GREAT players or coaches.

8-4 is perfectly reasonable in a normal season When you can post wins against scrubs and then mix in the marginal non conference p5 games you should at least win 4 if not 5, split your sec games, 8 wins, play a 10 game conference and the narrative changes. The bottom line is this is a qb game and their isn’t one on the roster.

In the division, we should beat UK, USCe, Vandy, and Mizz virtually every year. UF and UGA have an inherent recruiting advantage over us based on the demographics of the recruiting bases. As long as the current demographics prevail and those 2 programs are competently managed they will be better than us most years but we can be competitive and should beat them more than we have the last 10 full seasons plus this one (3 total). I recognize that we've got to crawl before we can walk, and I wouldn't be that disappointed with the season if we had been good enough to beat Kentucky and Arkansas. 4-3 with losses to Bama and @UGA and@Aub would be a lot more palatable than the product Pruitt and JG have given us.

Good question.

1. We are no longer a top 5-10 program. We are are not a year away from winning the East. We cannot get the top coach on the market most years.
2. We have history and resources that only 20 teams in the FBS can match.

Both are true.

We should not accept 8 losing records in last 13 years. We should not accept losing to Georgia State. We should not accept losing by 27 to Kentucky. We should not accept losing most games by at least 2 TDs. We should not accept losing half the time to Vandy.

The right coach can fix these things quickly. But our brass has settled on the wrong guy at least 3 times in a row. Kiffin is the only coach to notch anything of note in the first year.

It’s because there are a significant portion of the fan base that keeps spewing this stuff about us being a top 10 in wins of all time and our good run in the 90’s and early 2000s. Some want to say that oh we are TN and we should expect championships. It’s laughable.

We are not as good of a program as done want to think. We haven’t been in a long time. Our expectations at this point should be 8 wins with an occasional 9 win season sprinkled in. The days of TN being an actual relevant force in the SEC are long gone.

The expectation at Tennessee is competitive football. We don’t expect them to win every game but we do expect for them to compete. That is not an unrealistic expectation.

Any 3rd year head coach at Tennessee that has not had at least one competitive contest against Alabama, Georgia and Florida; should have the decency and self respect to resign.
