Expectations after 4 years

Expectations for any program are to compete and win championships.

Like has been stated before (by me and others), it is becoming clear that Jones can and did improve the program. It is a winning and relevant football team again. For the most part (basically except Alabama), you can't just assume a win against Tennessee anymore.

However, I don't believe he will take it to a championship level. Which means.....

You have the Mark Richt scenario. He's winning enough to keep his job, but not make anyone truly happy.

If that is correct, how long Tennessee keeps him around remains to be seen.

Would you trade HC right now?

What were your realistic expectations for Butch Jones through 4 years when he was hired?

Also if Butch was fired today what would be your realistic expectations for the new coach after 4 years?

I will be completely honest here. I barely knew who Butch Jones was. I had to google his name. So when he was hired, my expectations were extremely low. Maybe just a tad bit better than one of the worst college football coaches of the modern era. I figured after 4 years we would have maybe 1 bowl win and nowhere near the top 25.

Depends on who the coach was that was hired. If it was another coach from a small school, then I would expect about what Butch has been able to do. Now, if it were a proven winner with a great resume, I would be expecting 10+ wins a year. It is what it is.

His contract ends in 2020 so he will not be dismissed prior to that unless a 5 win season pops up. He will have a senior QB in 2020 and if he finishes 11-2 he will get an extension to 2024. Got to be optimistic.

My expectations were for him to come in and stabilize the roster so a good coach could hit the ground running after four years. If the AD position wasn't in limbo Butch would have been right on schedule.

So you are saying if Hart was still AD he would have fired CBJ after this season.
Laughable

I expected him to have us competitive again. We are. I expected him to upgrade the talent. He has. I expected us to have no NCAA issues. We don't. I expected him to have relatively good citizenship from the players. We do. I expected Neyland to be sold out regularly. It is. I expected to be optimistic about the next 4 years. I am. I expected him to stick around a long time. I hope he does. I expect us to win championships soon. We will.

He won't survive another 4-4 SEC record. Whoever the AD is knows that recruiting will take a nose dive into the high 20s low 30s, there will be no chance of replacing him with a decent coach.

I'm not upset. You naysay and mischaracterize and dissemble... Your presence here may be summed up as petty sniping.

Which is why I talk about the facts and performance... and you attack me for doing so... right?

Personally I'm done with Butch. Completely out. I wouldn't even get back on board with winning the division. I want him and his stupid, f****ng face to get the hell off the Jumbotron and out of Knoxville, and I want a coach that has the common decency to not piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

I'm always going to root for this team, but I will not root for that buffoon. I sincerely hope we do well this year, but I will be desperately hoping some other program is dumb enough to hire him.

Fulmer didn't even average 10 wins a year?

9.1875 wins per year was Fulmer's average!!!

Fulmer was mediocrity?

Averages don't tell the entire story like many want to think.

Fulmer got to the top of the division 6 times, the top of the conference 2 times, and the very top once. Id be hard pressed to think the fans would view Fulmer the same had he not done all of that and just won 9 every year.

Highly Unlikely unless someone hires him away, we are stuck with him for atleast 2 years barring a 5-7 Season.

If he leaves it wont be a step up but rather to a spot that better fits his ability without the expectations.

I don't think he goes 5-7 next year but I don't think thats the threshold for him being fired either. The record is important but failing to win the division in the state it is in adds a another dynamic.

The responce was to a person who said we should win 10games every year, not even Fulmer did that, and he came into a dream team unlike Butch Jones that is all I am saying.

He won't be gone barring a losing season, guaranteed. Thy are not going to fire a coach who brought you out of the storm and is moving a program in the right direction.

Not saying that Butch is the long term answer but he is safe until after 2018 barring a complete melt down and losing season.

His seat isn't anywhere near as hot as many on here believe it to be!!!

CBJ had done everything realistically we could ask for until:

- losing to USCe this year
- losing to Vandy this year
- mediocre recruiting for 2017 class

He turned the program around, raised the talent level significantly, has the players doing well in the classroom and in the community, beat Florida, etc.

It's really a shame because those 2 late season losses set him back significantly in the court of public opinion.

In all honesty, I believe the standard should be to win a championship in 4 years.

So how many coaches in Tennessee's' history have met that standard?

Not Jones
Not Dooley
Not Kiffin
Not Fulmer
Not Majors
Not Battle
Doug Dickey!!! Won the SEC in his 4th season (1967)...

So every coach since Dickey is a failure...

Yeah but not necessarily in the eyes of the administration!!!
