First off, I have been sooooo pumped for this season!! I usually very optimistic. I have waited a day, and am still angry and confused how any football coach at any level could be so bad at times.

I hear people saying he was trying to not show too much before the bigger games. Well first off you can be "vanilla" and still throw basic mid and deep passes.

Second, any coach that saw the score at half or at latest half way through 3rd would realize they are going to have to open up play book more.

I like all Vol fans hope he just pushed the "vanilla playbook" to far and we win a championship, but to say Butch was smart to play it that way the whole game makes no sense imo.

I would also like to know did any media ask Butch how he graded themselves?(coaches)

Butch said they need to grow and learn from their mistakes and he wasn't kidding one bit

I also do not want to hear the "it was first game rust" excuse, because it was Appy State's first game too, and they were playing on the road!

I watched the Texas A&M game today, and they were 4th and goal on the 1 during OT (they had the ball first) and they went for it resulting in a TD.

That TD was ultimately the game winner.

Butch would have never made that call. Sometimes I feel like he is too timid and so afraid of failure that it causes him to fail.

We (fans) aren't kidding either. We never should have been in the position we found ourselves. Again, count our lucky stars their kicker missed--twice. We can't count on "luck" to pull us through every game.

The coaches had all off season to learn from their mistakes from last season, and judging after the first game, it looked like they didn't learn a thing.

Devil's Advocate: This was one of their three major games(Us, Miami and whoever they play in a bowl) to make an impact to future recruits and their program overall. So they spent all summer prepping for us and Miami in the regular season. They won't spend nearly as much time on the other opponents and it will show on the scoreboard.

I think Appy State was a better team than anyone expected and I think this team and coaching staff didn't take it nearly as serious as they should have.

It's been mentioned multiple times already but Appy State was nationally ranked higher than Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Missouri.

Last two years vs Florida make your point well.

How many more of these "the sky is falling" threads are you all going to start?

This is not "the sky is falling" thread. I started this thread because I am baffled by the decisions that are being made. I even started by saying I have been one of the most optimistic fans. I also ended by saying I hope he just pushed the "vanilla playbook" to far. Again though you can be "vanilla" and still throw the ball more and certainly not play it that way when score is tight in fourth quarter!

Defensively, I saw massive improvement where we made actual adjustments to what App St was doing. Kudos out to defensive captains and Shoop. Offensively you are absolutely correct, seems like our offense was in the same place we saw when we played BGSU, OU, and UF last year, seems like Debord forgot what he used to overcome and finally put a winning offense on the field last year.

99% of coaches kick a FG there. Sumlin is under pressure and went for it in OT rules are different. If they didn't score and lose on a FG Sumlin is the butt of jokes today. He gambled and it worked. Let's not act like that's what "good" coaches do in that situation.

This probably makes no difference, but I can't stand to see an OC or DC sitting in the booth. I would much rather them be on the sidelines interacting with the players.

This is about the only reason I've been able to relax after the way we played. We should see vast improvements next week and I will be paying close attention to how the o-line plays moving forward.
