Are you suggesting Damon Evans is more qualified and he WAS an AD?:lolabove:

No question about it. Has Johnny ever been associate AD anywhere, or have other relevant experience beside coaching?

I'm sure he could drink Evans under the table but that's not in the job requirements last I checked.

Evans was an intern with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1993 as a compliance and academic affairs assistant, then served as director of compliance and operations at the University of Missouri in 1994. In 1995, Evans returned to the SEC as the director of compliance and was promoted to assistant commissioner for compliance in 1997. He returned to UGA as an associate athletics director in 1998.
Evans served from 1998 to 2001 as a member of the NCAA Division 1-A management council and as chair of the UGA academic task force in charge of reviewing academic credentials of prospective student-athletes. He became senior associate athletics director in 2000. In December 2003, UGA president Michael F. Adams announced that Evans would succeed long-time AD and former Bulldogs coach Vince Dooley on July 1, 2004.

I think its high time Johnny Majors is offered the AD job at The University of Tennessee, in secret of course, but he should be offered. If Joe Pa can coach at 83 surely Johnny can be AD .I read an article where Fulmer exchanged nearly 30 phone calls to AD Dickey and President Johnson combined while hospitalized. I seriously wish Fulmer would have never been coach now. At first I was okay to say he stayed a few years too long but now he and Hamilton both are no longer needed ……..AT ALL..

Honor Johnny in some way--yes, but don't make him AD. You ARE kidding, of course. No point in giving him a premature death.

i think one thing that would go over big with fans, and that would stir up some excitement, would be for majors and fulmer to go on some sort of a reunion tour this fall ... kind of like bush, sr. and clinton ..... mend some fences ... maybe set up a tent on game days and sign autographs .........

i know that both would rather lose a limb than do that but it would be nice ... it seems like the fanbase is never going to escape the bad feelings between those two ..

i was a young lad, when all the phillip fulmer and majors stuff went down, but i feel for majors. they should at least honor him permantly in some way before he dies. heckphil has his own street.

They are also erecting a statue of him outside Neyland. I think i read somewhere it should be done with in a year when that area of the stadium is scheduled to be completed.

im glad you posted this.....i have never been comfortable with what went down with majors.....i thought fulmer stabbed him in the back, and being that way, he would someday hurt the program. fulmer was basically only about fulmer( a wolf in a very large sheeps clothing.)...never trusted him and didnt think he was that bright....when he lost what majors had created, he went straight down and took UT with him. as i recall, majors had angered some big time supporters, drank too much, and had health problems. fulmer should have went to usc at the time if he wanted a head coaching job(even though he had the abilities of an assistant), and came back to UT if he was good enough. fulmer did prove one thing....being a great recruiter doesnt mean you will be a great head coach.

not really righting a wrong either. I'm a Majors fan, but the guy's teams underperformed pretty regularly. His conservatism simply turned into Fulmer's conservatism.

Interesting. What always bothered me about the Fulmer hire is, no one else was interviewed or considered for the job.

I didn't think Fulmer was the best candidate UT could find. The program was definitely on the upswing and going in the right direction when he took over as opposed to when he resigned.

I loved Johnny, but we all wanted him gone at the time. He coundn't beat Alabama or Florida and this is when they had Bill Curry. As for the AD job, Johnny does not look like he is in great health anymore for a full time job.

You may be correct, as I am sure you have done the research, but as I recall the last years Johnny spent at Pitt he served as AD.... or so it seems to me

Sounds like he was given a somewhat ceremonial title at the end of his coaching days.

He retired from coaching following the 1996 NCAA season and served at Pitt in the position of Special Assistant to the Athletic Director and Chancellor until the summer of 2007

I think the fear was at the time that Fulmer would leave for a head coaching job after doing pretty well filling in for Majors. Then the next year with a new OC things would fall apart like Fulmers last season. So TN went ahead and jumped the gun and moved Fulmer into the HC job to continue what we had going. The perception was the Majors was on the downswing and only had a year or two left anyway. After he left TN, it seemed to prove that Majors was at the end.

Malcom Glazer...we need someone who can raise cash and support a men's football team and then add a men's soccer program that bankrupts the football program:eek:lol:

I have to tell y'all about the day I met Coach Majors. I was in a Cracker Barrel and recognized him about two years ago. I went up and introduced myself and told him I was a BAMA fan. He talked to me for about 45 minutes and I think he actually enjoyed it as much as I did. I did not try to take his time and was very polite but he just kept talking to me. We talked about Coach Bryant and many other things. I really enjoyed meeting him and he was a very nice man.

Not sure why we want to give Johnny the reins of the UT Athletic Department because we are sorry he lost his job 20 years ago.

I say buy him a plaque and tell Phil to call and apologize. It's cheaper, you get to celebrate, and then go interview and hire the best up and coming AD in the country.

Its funny hearing about all the fans that feel sorry for Coach Majors. I doubt many know what, why and how it happened. Coach Majors did most of it to himself. If the media were like they are today back then, man would it be embarrassing. As good of a coach as he was, he was an even better drunk. Not a good spirited drunk, but a mean drunk. His drinking wasn't limited to just his off time.

Very accurate post.
