Came across this piece in the SI Vault a few days ago. Man, was he ever special:

It was late on the evening of Dec. 6, 1997, when the most important speech in the recent history of Tennessee football was delivered deep inside the Georgia Dome, an address that would shape the future of both the speaker and the program. With the Volunteers trailing Auburn 20-10 at halftime of the SEC championship game, the Tennessee coaches were going over X's and O's in the locker room as the players sat in silence, many of them with their heads bowed.

Suddenly, junior linebacker Al Wilson stood up, cleared his throat, and asked for everyone's attention. Speaking in a resounding baritone that could have shaken the concrete walls, Wilson explained how much this day meant to him. Soon his voice cracked, then he started to weep. Before long, he was getting in the faces of teammates he believed had underperformed in the first half, most notably quarterback Peyton Manning and linebacker Leonard Little, arguably the team's two best players.

High-Voltage Vol Whenever his less-experienced mates needed a jolt, they could count on Al Wilson's electrifying play and supercharged leadership to provide it - SI.com

I'm 20 years older than Al Wilson and a heterosexual white male, but I would hug him big time if I ever had the privilege of meeting him in person. It was easy to see that he was the heart and soul of those teams. He is an incredible Volunteer and a VFL.

I'm from the town that Al grew up in and played football for his high school. He's still a legend around here. His toughness was very characteristic of that team . Just pure grit.

Al is my favorite Vol with the exception of Reggie White.

I would be more that happy for Al to come back and coach on the defense in some capacity. Amazing man.

Al was hitting 225 ft. line drive home runs and running the point like Magic when he was 11. He was born legend.

This program needs Wilson within it in some capacity. I don't care if he is a coach or not, but having a guy like him visit in the spring like Witten and Peyton both did would be huge.

I remember hearing about this. His senior season, he played with an arm in a cast for most of the year and his leg/foot suffered injuries as well. He was the incredible warrior most coaches dream about.

Fast forward.....

Playing for the Broncos, they were defending on a goal line stand when the opposing RB (Chargers?) tried to "leap/dive over". Wilson dove right back. The announcers said he looked like a "missile" and knocked a RB with a full head of steam completely backwards into the backfield. It was an absolute amazing play.

I remember seeing him with L. Little in presidential eating and hanging out. Those guys were huge!

Does he have a degree yet? I have to believe that was the only thing holding him back in the past.

That is not a problem and would be handled if/when Mr. Wilson made a decision to coach in any capacity.

Reason I brought it up was when Dooley was replacing Sirmon , he was a popular candidate but it was shot down for that reason.
