From an interview with AJM with J Rome. Thought it was interesting and sort of goes along with the myth that 5 stars are all that in the end.

“I think that’s one of the things that is wrong with recruiting out of high school,” said McCarron. “You have guys who have never played the game of football rating these guys that they are a 5-star, because they’re sitting behind a computer screen watching their highlight film. Well, their highlight film is supposed to be good, the last time I checked. That’s the kind of thing that ticks me off about recruiting and when these kids come in and they’re 5-stars and they expect to play right off the bat. It’s a little entitlement and when they don’t play off the bat, they get a little ticked off and they don’t want to work.”

Interesting tidbit. Ainge just said that on the rosters of the Super Bowl teams Denver only has one five-star player ranked out of high school and Seattle only has two. Interesting.

Edit: about 40% of Seattles roster is made up of players who were 2 stars or unranked players!!

McCarron makes a very good point.

Crappy analysts make for crappy analysis and ratings. Add in that all players do not mature at the exact same chronological age. Add in when they begin collegiate level S&C programs. Add in coaching abilities.

It's all kind of silly to live and die by ratings and rankings. They are general indications and observations which can have value, but are not the end all be all. The coaching staff is the final determinant that matters. If they know their stuff and you can compete on academics, facilities, tradition and fan base - you know you have the talented roster you need to compete at a high level.

When you look back at great years your team had you will probably remember the 4 stars and 3 stars more. They worked hard to prove something and came in with the attitude if I want to see the field I have to earn it and will do so.

So let me get this straight... You have a much higher % chance of making an NFL roster if you are a 5-star in high school, than you do if you were a 4-star, 3-star or 2-star. Makes sense to me.

Of course there are going to be "more" 3-stars and 2-stars that make it because there are like 5000 more of those in every single recruiting class than there are 5-stars. % wise though 5-stars have a much greater chance of making it to the league.

"No school produces busts like Florida". OK, besides the double meaning, that article is worth the read just for that statement alone.

You and I argued about this topic several years ago... Except we were looking at recruits that would become All-Americans.

At the time I recall the stats revealed that the difference was like 7% better for a 5* to make compared to a 4*... My point was there's not much difference between a 4* and a 5*.... You had disagreed with that. Now we see this Bleacher Report on the subject. I like how it points out the success rate of the top half of 5* is notably better. That point pulls our differences together. Each year there will be 15-20 guys that are above the rest.

The star gazers won't like this stat.
