Ex-players expect Brady Hoke to 'elevate the standard' at Tennessee

How much can "Non-Coaches" like Stripling participate in practices and giving coaching advice?

Officially, not much. I am a little hazy on what Stripling's duties are now. I am sure it has a legit job description that might include supervising the other "Non-Coaches" and studying game film with them. Otherwise, I am unenlightened.

I really like the Hoke hire for DL coach, I think it was Jones' best hire.

However, I'm gonna temper some excitement here because I think Strip was a very good DL coach as well. And I'm certain he taught the technical aspects of playing on the DL and I'm pretty sure he also wanted his guys to play with great physicality.

Can Hoke do those things better than Strip? Dunno, maybe he can, I hope he can. But I'm not sure why we should get overly stoked based on this article, no offense.
Strip was a good Dline coach but the injuries decimated the Dline and it showed big time on the back side of our schedule. Get those guys back healthy and wala....Hoke will be an amazing Dline coach. It's really very simple....

If our DT's can come back 100% healthy, strong and ready then our D line can become a solid force.

With King Kongbo still growing, getting stronger and faster Shoop can use him on stunts at DT or DE and add lots of confusion.

The 1 person I'm really excited about is Phillips.

Phillips can become a sackmaster at DE for us and you can bet that he's been learning really well from DB the last 2 years.

If Phillips reaches his awesome potential then I expect him to make some enemy O Linemen want to crawl into a hole and hide.

I expect our Shoop Troops to make a serious impact this season.

VFL...GBO!!!

Shouldn't that be the expectation?

Should be, but all we can do is imagine at this point. Tuttle is far and away the best of the 3, but he's had two bad injuries and can't stay healthy.....KMac is a bust and Kongbo was very underwhelming both in play and attitude last year.

K-Mac a bust? He's constantly being double teamed in every game and still has a couple of more years to show out. So in your mindset, if a player takes longer to progress than others then he's automatically considered a "bust"? I would wait until he gets the right coaching by Hoke and see how he progresses this upcoming season first before we start throwing our players under the bus.

KMac came to us as the #1 player in the country according to Scout....247 had him as the #6 overall recruit in the country....and he's been what here? For one thing, not even a starter. He's been little more than a project getting some snaps behind two solid but far from great DTs in Danny OBrien and Kendall Vickers. Last year he played in 6 games....he had 2 solo tackles, a half TFL and no sacks.

You can try to fall back on "he was double teamed" and he didn't get the right coaching, whatever that means....but the fact is, given his status coming in and the expectations associated with it, he's been a major bust to date. Hopefully he pulls it together this year and turns everything around.

Another quick thought. Was KMac really commanding double teams with Derek Barnett just to his right? Also, other collegiate DTs are double teamed and still do good work getting to the qb, tackling guys for losses and just generally producing for their teams. Compare KMac to Trenton Thompson last season.....I'm thinking our defense could've used and extra 27 solo tackles, 9 tfls and 5 sacks, and I'd venture to say that Thompson saw his share of double teams.

What does one have to with the other? I'm only factually discussing KMac's recruiting rankings and his career thus far at Tennessee.

Or which part was "speaking the truth"? Half-full KB...always half-full. :hi:

Nah. I can only speak to what we know of KMac at this point.....top 5 player nationally coming in who's been little more than a project and can't crack the starting lineup at a need position.....and has given very little in terms of on-field production thus far. Cup has been empty so far....half-full only applies to KMac for what he will hopefully do in the two seasons he has remaining, and this team badly needs him to live up to the billing. Sometimes the truth is just the truth.
