He had a stroke several years ago I believe and was in a wheel chair since. Sad way to live.

Great player. I loved seeing him throw the football in the stands after he scored. RIP

Walter Chadwick was one of the reasons I chose UT in 1969. The 1967 team was a very special group of players. Living in Alabama, I grew up pulling for the Tide (yeah, don't we all have dirty secrets) but my father (a VFL) was determined that I was exposed to the Orange. He and I went to the UT-UA game in B'ham in 1967 where the Vols won my heart and the game over the #2 Tide. I don't remember Chadwick specifically, but I later remember multiple newspaper photos of him hurdling over the LOS. Those photos always featured that beautiful T on the side of his helmet and he appeared to be 6-7 feet in the air. I later found out that he was the SEC high jump champ as well. To this day, I do not believe I have ever seen a RB jump a LOS as well as Chadwick. He was an inspiration then and became an even greater one after his accident in '71. Godspeed, Walter.

Besides his famous leaps over the line, wasn't Walter Chadwick the Vol who punted the ball high into the stands after scoring a touchdown (that's now illegal)? He lived life well.

I think that was Gary Kreis. Chadwick May have done so as well but I remember with my 68 year old brain him almost always throwing the ball into the end zone stands. That’ll get you 15 today for sure! Hope I’m correct. In the ajc video above you can see WC throw the ball into the stands after he scores. Great memories.
