EVH's sensible post-game thread

We are still a very young team. BG is a very well coached team that won a mid-major conference last year. I think our young guys eased off the gas after getting up 21-3. They will learn you don't ease up until you're ahead, have the ball, and there is less than 3 seconds to go in the game.

Nothing teaches better than having you fingers burned.

Things I liked:

1. Commitment to run game
2. John Kelley looks more than serviceable
3. Jennings looks completely legit
4. Cam Sutton

Thing I didn't like:

1. Coverage skills of Moseley and Foreman (hope there's a fix in the works - I was probably a little too hard on them last night, but it remains true that I'm not sure their talent level is up to top tier SEC standards)
2. MLB
3. Kicker

Medley had a bad game, but that punter looks like the real deal.

Im confident the corner position will be fixed rather quickly.

Im sorry but Jumper has absolutely no business what so ever playing MLB in this conference. Kirkland needs to step up fast.

Medley just seemed to have an off night, i hope thats all it is and not a trend.

Not sure if it was mentioned but the two touchdowns (one by Hurd and Pearson) that were called back really hurt. We have to have better technique on the blocks.

I've read that people are still concerned about Dobbs but if that touchdown to Pearson would have stood and Malone would have caught that pass down the middle that hit his hands, Dobbs would have been 17-23, 275 yards and 3 tds. Overall he had a good day. I do understand the concern about the under throws and late throws. Hopefully the he gets better as the season goes on.

I think the only real question last night was who was the td pass intended for when wolf grabbed the ball way up in the air, was it for wolf or smith? joking of course but I'm leaning toward smith with wolf making an incredible play.

The only real negatives were:

The second quarter slow down
The WR drops
Three bad penalties (the two holds and the roughing the passer)
Medley had an off game in Nashville
The two big passes (which can be fixed easily)

BG, is by far the fastest no huddle team we will play all season. That really effects the way our DB's line up and how quickly they can make adjustments. It's also really hard on the bigger guys on the DLine. It was a really tough match up for our D. We will play much better vs Pro style and power run teams. Our Wr's have to learn how to get open, and to come back to the qb when he's in trouble or moving outside the pocket. The Wr's are way too talented for the way they played yesterday. Hurd is a freaking beast.

BG did play fast as they ran 85 plays to our 84 plays yet they only had the ball for 26 minutes compared to our almost 34 minutes of possession. This will definitely help prepare us for OU defensively.

Additionally, not that this was mentioned, but Dobbs had a 176 Passer Rating. That is Very Effective.

Next week will be a test and very entertaining.

I look at the second half as a positive for the defense. We made adjustments and held them to 10 points. Their first drve after the delay marched right down the field but after that we made plays and were fortunate to recover a fumble when they were on the doorstep of a guaranteed score. Next week we will have CWM back and more experience. All good things.

Thank God for this thread, there are too many ship jumpers and panic threads. They returned all of their starters from last year, their O-line has the second most experience in all of college football, and their QB was dropping dimes on those perfectly thrown deep balls. They played and excecuted almost a perfect game plan against us and we still won by 29. They may not play that well again all season. However, I believe that team was much better than we gave them credit for coming in to this thing; they exposed our weaknesses and we will be better in the long term because of it. Our D-backs coach was out which hurt us as far as in game adjustments go but I guarantee he will be all over them this week.
I am not so sure that we weren't overlooking our opponent. We got punched in the mouth defensively and we didn't collect ourselves until after the delay. Zero chance we will be looking past OK.

Relatively speaking I think it was a good first game even with the high expectations.

I DON"T agree with using Dooley era as a standard though so saying "yeah, but if Dooley was there..." doesn't get it.

We put up almost 60 points. We won by more than a field goal. No one got seriously hurt. Some of our younger guys got reps. Meh. I will take it.

Generally agree, but we had better get used to uptempo offenses, that storm is coming. Playing teams like BG is a good start. I think this game was a good tune up for us, and a bit of a wake up call. I think we will be better for it.

Nothing wrong in a sophisticated offense to position receivers that way down field.

This is the usual VN meltdown even after wins. By Wednesday, the tone will shift to us being national title contenders. Same tune, new year.

THIS!! Can we get a host of VN posters to remove the saddle off that dead horse they're spurring about Dobb's inaccuracy? Kid had a great game and was on the money for a couple of incompletes WRs missed.

Our coverage is definitely going to be the focus this week in film and practice. So we should be better off in this next game because we know OU is going to throw it.

The pace really hurt us. They'd throw for a big gain and we would just get rattled/lost as they were lining back up ready to snap it. I think if Martinez was there we would have much better adjustments. But they still burned us straight up on occasions.

I like the balance between Hurd and Kamara too. Really loved the way they were used in this game - both over 100 yards, TDs, best combo running attack since the two-headed Travis monster. I think it is safe to say Georgia is the only team that can say they have a 1-2 combo like that in the SEC.

Bama does.

Eddie, Bama has the best backfield. Georgia has an argument. Tennessee is not far behind.

Let's not get lost in rainbowland..

I think the way this game went will do the Vols better than if we would have scored the other two times the penalties deraild those drives .And if the defense had not gave up the td on the drive they got the 4&3 on and the one with the real long completion. The Vols might have won the game either 69 -16 or 73-16 and probally would have got the big head.Maby this game a will make them work harder to fix up the prolems.Go Vols!
