If he has time to drop back and set to make the throws, he can make almost all of them. The arm talent is there. I know the popular thing to do is rip players after a tough loss, but I think JG did GREAT against WV.
. . . His biggest weak points is the middle of the field and finesse. He tends to throw low to the middle of the field. And his touch on the ball in the short passing game isn't there yet.
I can deal with these things. I'd much rather his tendency be to throw low over the middle than for it to sail. Sailing high over the middle is a perfect recipe for a pick. I agree that he could use some touch, but I also don't mind the velocity. Less chance for the defender to close.
He struck me as very talented but raw QB. There's every opportunity for him to be really good if the coaching and effort is there.
The worst play of the bunch to me was that he didn't send motion into the blitz or check out when WV brought the house on the throw where he got his head taken off. Overall I really wish he would have had 10-15 more attempts. Helton/Pruitt were holding him back and I honestly don't know why. I get that we wanted to eat some clock. Although the 3-7 yard passes are just as good as a run attempt to burn clock.
I think it was all part of the game plan. If JG hits Palmer in the corner of the endzone then I think most come away with a much different opinion of the game. Maybe WVU scores again after that. Maybe we don’t jump offsides on that field goal. 36-21 doesnt sound near as bad as 40-14.
The game plan wasn’t bad, but I think after seeing how JG threw the ball around we will see more trust put in him by Pruitt and Helton to go win us games with his arm.
