Even If We Got Gruden

So you're advocating keeping a known loser because there's a possibility that the next guy might also be a loser? That makes a lot of sense.

No just saying people are wanting gruden, but I know if he had a bad yr the same ones would be saying he had to go

With all due respect OP...I disagree too.

We know he can coach and his recruiting will give us a two deep capacity that we need to equalize our talent level with the elite teams in the SEC.

but like with dooley people wont give him time

Gruden's record is only 2 games over 500 in the NFL, not like it's Bill Walsh or Bill Belichick. What is more concerning is most on here are setting themselves up for Gruden or bust. I'll take Strong all day every day. Someone call Charlie!!!

Which includes winning a Super Bowl and his division five times.

How are three years instant? :eek:lol:

Was directly speaking of grudens first year were he to come to UT. With all the expectations that would be on him his first year. If it wasnt stellar people would turn on him too.

I don't think people started wanting Dooley gone until the Ky game at the end of year 2. I fully expect next year's coach to struggle with the schedule we have. But I think Gruden would be way better than Dooley in year 2.

No, they won't because Gruden is a known winner. I remember back in the 70's when Majors came here and it took a while. Majors was a known winner.

Even if we got Gruden, and he hired the best staff, and we had even one bad yr everyone would be saying what a bad hire, and he needs to go

Don't be that guy that can't admit when he's wrong - grow up bud. Did Bama fans call for Saban's head after he lost to La Monroe in year 1?? Nope, instead they sat back and watched his staff sign the #1 recruiting class in the country, as well as attended a sold out SPRING GAME for the second year in a row. See, there was a light at the end of their tunnel - they KNEW things would change and change fast. Typically works pretty well when you hire a proven winner.

On one hand you say that you aren't defending Dooley, and now you're saying that people didn't give him time. Dooley is in his third year, and here we are, going into November without an SEC win. We have given him time. We haven't seen improvement. Hell, if he had beaten anyone this year, he would probably be given more time. But he hasn't.

Fair enough, but I think you're wrong. Most of us are smart enough to see improvement, even if it doesn't mean instant wins. We see next year's schedule as much more difficult than this year's and I doubt many of the reasonable fans wanting change are expecting to see 9 wins next year.

Your initial post said one year. And what you are saying can go toward any coach that we hire, just not Gruden. The thing is, you hire the best coach available, and put it in his hands. With that comes an amount of trust that he can get the job done. I am tired of coaching changes. I want a coach that I can stand behind and say that he is going to get it done. I cannot say that about Dooley.

I'm not quite sure what you are getting at, that we should keep Dooley or hire someone besides Gruden, but any coach that comes here and fails to show improvement in three years is going to hear grumblings.

I think Vol fans are smart enough to know progress when we see it and to identify a steady decline if present. Look at Texas AM, Arkansas before Patrino left, South Carolina, even Vandy and Miss. State. Those teams are playing good tough competitive ball. They are not "on top" of the SEC or their division but they steadily improve. They have a chance to win almost any game. They don't give away games or give up during games.

If we were playing ball like that, I'm okay. I can wait it out for the guy to build the program. Here, we are constantly mus-aligned, not adjusted, out of position, confused and out schemed by EVERY SINGLE SEC TEAM. Being confident, having favorable match-ups and being in position to make plays builds players confidence. Having Lathers running 35-40 down-field covering a receiver is poor coaching. Having a linebacker cover #9 man to man in space on 3 and 5 is poor coaching. Players lose confidence.

If we win games with Dooley, it is because our talent level is much higher it is never because of coaching. That is the reason he must go.
