Current Commits - Offense (7)
QB - Ferguson
WR - Smith
WR - Harris
OL - Sanders
OL - Kendrick
OL - Skipper
TE - Jackson

What do we need? 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 OL

Who are the top targets?

Running Backs - The Vols have no RBs committed and are looking to add two. Derrick Green is #1 on the RB board. He's a high-impact player that is also an early enrollee. Green would likely split carries with Neal next year and would form a formidable 1-2 punch that the Vols have not had in quite some time. A.J. Turman is a tough inside-the-tackles runner that has expressed his intention to be a Vol. Although other names are being tossed around such as Williams, Kamara, Bryant, Wilkins, Folston, etc., Green and Turman are likely our guys. If, by chance, Green ends up elsewhere, look for the Vols to make a hard push for Wilkins (having some doubts about his commitment to Auburn), Williams (down to Tennessee and South Caroline), and Bryant (who wants to be the man at an SEC school).

Wide Receivers - The Vols have three WRs currently committed, but I have been told Camion Patrick will not be a part of this class. The Vols are looking to add two or three WRs, with at least one being a JUCO. Marquez North is #1 on the WR board and has publicly declared the Vols his leader. As long as the Vols take care of business on the field the next few weeks, North is likely a Vol. North is more talented than any of the WR currently on the roster except for JH and CP. North would get immediate playing time next year…he’s a special talent. The JUCO WRs we are pursuing and will definitely take the first to commit (maybe both) are Rumph and Strong. Rumph seems most likely to be a Vol as he has officially visited and publicly declared the Vols as his leader. Rumph is a big target (6’5” 215) and would come in next year with the expectation that he would immediately contribute. He’s no CP, but he is a high-impact JUCO WR. Rumph would have two years of eligibility remaining. Strong is an intriguing target. He does not have incredible measurable (not that they are bad), but he puts up huge numbers, finds a way to get open, has great hands, and will have three years of eligibility remaining. The question on Strong is, when is he going to graduate. At this point, that answer is not clear. The Vols are also recruiting Eldridge Massington and would take him if he wanted to flip from USCw. Because of the success of JH and CP, the Vols are receiving recent interest from a few top-10 HS WRs, and the Vols are currently working on setting up some official visits for the Missouri weekend. This could get interesting.

Tight Ends – The Vols have one TE committed and may add one more if there is room. Lucas Wilson is most likely the only other TE the Vols would take. Wilson has good hands, average speed, and is projected to be more of a blocking TE than a deep receiving threat. Wilson is down to Tennessee and Air Force. At this point, Wilson appears to be favoring the Vols, but he very well may end up choosing a career in piloting at the Air Force Academy. The JUCO TEs this year are not impressive, but a prospect or two may emerge as the JUCO seasons progress.

Offensive Line – The Vols have three OL “publicly” committed. The worst-kept silent commitment is Reeve Koehler, and he gives the Vols four offensive line commitments (two interior and two tackles). The Vols are unlikely to take a fifth OL commitment unless a big-time prospect is landed. The name to keep an eye on is Derwin Gray (currently committed to Maryland). There is an outside shot for the Vols to sway his teammate (LB Yannick Ngakoue), which would make the recruitment of Gray a lot more interesting. Pittman continues to evaluate HS film and new names may come to the surface. At this point, the coaches are very happy with the 4-man OL class.

Best-case finish – Green, Turman, North, Rumph, Koehler

With our success running the ball out of two back sets, any word on getting a FB or HB/TE/ FB hybird? It just seems hard to believe we are not addressing that need. CJC has to see the success we have with a mobile blocker as opposed to two TE sets. Play action is more credible when we can actually pound the rock.

At this point, Wilson appears to be favoring the Vols, but he very well may end up choosing a career in piloting at the Air Force Academy. The other TE to keep an eye on is Chauntez Jackson from California. Very intriguing prospect with high upside but there are grade concerns. Jackson has played DE/TE for his HS team and could eventually turn into a Rivera-esque TE. Jackson would be a nice pickup for the Vols if things work out. The coaches are looking at a few more TEs and sending out feelers across the country. The JUCO TEs this year are not impressive, but a prospect or two may emerge as the JUCO seasons progress.

As usual, thanks for the rundown. It really helps in keeping up with the recruiting information. I hate trying to find my way around the maze that is the recruiting forum. Many thanks.

JMO, but I would much rather have Chauntez Jackson as our TE in this class.

I agree with you. The only question is can Jackson get into and stay at UT from a grade standpoint? At least with Lucas Wilson the chance of attrition goes way down. At this point, with Rivera graduating, I don't see how the Vols can take a risk and strike out on TEs this year.

Getting a RB is #1 priority but priority #2 to me, is landing a blocking tight end that can contribute almost immediately..

I may be mistaken but, I think I saw a recruiting show on one of the sports networks evaluating Green. It said he was 6'3" and projected as a linebacker in college. It could have been the other RB prospect Derrick Henry. If Turman is tough between the tackles, I think he would be the best get! Go Vols!! :hi:

Wish we could just go steal one of the 50 TEs that Stanford and Notre Dame seem to fill their roster with every year. It's almost like they go to Costco or Sams to get TEs.

My bad! It was Henry who I saw was evaluated. I'll tell you, I don't know if Green likes us because it is obvious we need a game changer at running back or we have a recruiter who can get in the door. GBO :eek:k:

Any chance JRM moves to rb if we don't land a top flight recruit there?

Highly unlikely. Our needs in the secondary are greater than our needs at RB. Dooley is trying to get our best athletes on defense ala LSU, Bama, Florida.

I feel like a lot of next season's success hinges on whether or not we get Green...

It hinges on the defense improving in year 2 with Sal, and us landing a few impact players on that side of the ball.

I think if Bray comes back with CP the O will be fine.

How far away (how many recruiting classes) are we from having 'elite speed' on defense again?

If you watch our games, particularly the secondary, people tend to run by our guys like they are standing still. I know we had some burners in our last class. Are we 2 classes away?

The defense should be much improved next year. We don't lose anyone of significance (Lathers, Waggner, Teague, Fowlkes, Bohannon, Wilks) and our young secondary players should step in and provide quality secondary play. Also, we'll be a year older and stronger across the board.

i think only 11 teams currently run a 34 in the NFL - now a body like mccullers is very rare - but id say if he stay another year and can prove that he can play in other sets he could make himself a lot more money as he would open up more teams as options and be able to play on more downs

i think he can do this and he will stay another year

Running backs and linebackers got to have not need we got to have someone on third and 1 to run up the middle and move the sticks.
