Evaluating 2013 Class

I agree for the most part.

QB - Really don't think we could have done much better than we did. A+, I think between Riley, Josh, Nathan, Justin, and Charlie High, we will find us a great quarterback for the next 2-4 years. A+

RB - I wouldn't be so quick to just slap an F on there. While Jabo Lee is not anywhere near Derrick Green, he's not a bad prospect considering we still have Young, Lane, and Neal. I would give this a D+ But you are right in saying we MUST have some studs next year. No other option.

Really liked the way he upgraded the secondary, Bell would have helped there a ton, but it is what it is. Got some quality depth on the OL, hopefully they contribute.

But I agree with you that next year's focus has to be on some defensive playmakers. We're probably losing Johnson after this year, so we gotta have some LB's to step in and make the plays.

Given the amount of time that Jones and Company have been here, and the amount of ground they made up, and the quality of players they DID sign, I would give the class a B-. I don't think it's a great class, but I do think it's a good solid first class, to set us up for a massive class next year.

Rb definitely an F
Overall C+ to B-

Anything better than an overall average for this class is overstating it. Not being a downer, it is what it is.

We failed to secure an SEC running back and we failed miserably on recruiting for defensive line....nothing to cheer about....it is what it is

among other things, they didn't fill needs.

they need linebackers.......badly.

they need more and better d-lineman.

there some quality issues in places, quantity issues in places, etc.

This class not just fell short but swung and missed in several areas. Will be in the bottom of the SEC.
-DT: Not one pure DT in the class, and lost a JUCO commit to Barn. That's bad. Really bad.
-DE: Some Say Carr and Miller could both be tackles. If so great, but then they wiffed at end. Brown is a project.
-LB: Vereen seems like a player, but oh man they needed two more in a bad way. Bad.
-DB: Not to shabby, even if they lost Bell.

-QB: killed it.
-WR: Out of the park
-O-line: Decent, but no studs. Will still be priority position next year. Staff wiffed on several guys late.
-RB: They needed at least 2 large backs and got one scat back. Bad.
-TE: Not impressed. One average looking prospect and one JUCO volleyball player who has two to play two

The good. This staff probably could have signed a few more 3 stars but didn't. They didn't go after the low hanging fruit. They set their sights on Bellamy, Lawson, Green, Ford, Levenberry, Bell, and a few others. Out of the elite they got North.
The bad is they didn't really know the score. The staff would have been criticized for not going after those guys. I said a while back that CBJs is making a lot of noise but won't get the results that reflect the effort. I think CBJs lost a couple because he really thought he could get a few of those. Bell was the biggest blow, but certainly not the biggest position of need. I am much less excited about CBJs.

A C sounds about right. I'm very worried about the entire defense and the running game.

I think next year we will be able to run the ball. Obviously the passing game will be a wait and see, depending on QB.

But after next year, the running game will definitely be worrisome. Not getting a top RB hurt.

Definitely right about defense. Don't think we have near enough quality players across the board.

Next year's class is greatly important for the state of this program.

A lot of holes left that absolutely need to be filled.

I think this class is an F. I was extremely excited and optimistic given the effort CBJ and CO were putting in - they had great OVs lined up and weekend after weekend top prospects were talking about UT. That's never a bad thing.

Overall, just a terrible class. Didn't fill the needs we had. Didn't fill needs for the future.

Got some decent WR talent. That's it.

This is one of the worst defensive classes I have ever seen - especially coming off of the worst defensive season UT has ever had. This is not going to cut it and you will all see the results come the Fall.

Can CBJ and CO recruit. Yes, I think so.

Where they short on time and given an extremely difficult task? Yes, I think so.

Those can't and won't be used as excuses. This class is horrid.

Next year's class will be better.

But will it be enough to make a difference.

Next year, the offense will run a new system and will have a brand new QB. The O-Line will be blocking in a new scheme and the RBs will be okay. WR and TE will be new.

Defensively we go back to the 4-3: thank goodness.

Front 7 is just bad - with the exception of AJ and Curt. The defensive backfield is undersized and slow. We needed Bell in the worst way. This unit as a whole will be the reason for many losses.

Together with a new coaching staff, new system on O and D, combined with young players, some who are not SEC level talent - I do not have a lot of optimism for the year ahead.

Why are we evaluating the 2013 class right now? First, NSD isn't over. Second, given the outcome of today, don't be surprised if we sign a couple more players over the next week or so.

But, if I had to give it a grade, I'd say a C. Losing Vonn Bell hurts more than any other recruit we've lost in the past four years over the tenure of Dooley and Kiffin. We needed him badly for this defense. Dooley COMPLETELY screwed-up that recruitment.

Who do you think Tennessee will sign over the next week?

WR talent is much better than decent. On offense it starts with QB and we did address that I believe that is being overlooked at the moment. D backfield we did good. O-Line we needed more and next year will have to do better. Dline needed more but got 3 that I think are good sec prospects. RB is no excuse next year we HAVE to aquire a SEC TOP LEVEL RB! Overall B- to C+ range. Let's see how they are coached up before some call Butch Jones out, we have a staff that got in on some very good prospects ina short time recruiting wise. Many here that spout off know nothing of the time that it takes to put into recruiting. GO VOLS!!

Am I the person that thinks we didn't completely **** the bed this year? Yeah we missed on some top recruits, but let's be serious, we had a lackluster season, a late coaching change, and a coach that left us with very few relationships with recruits. We got some recruits that are gonna fill in well and with the right scheme, any player could step up and succeed.
@JJWatt: congrats to all recruits signing today. 5* or no-star, doesn't matter. It's all about the work you put in & sacrifices you make #Former2Star

Offense was always going to be tough to replace with the talented skill players we lost this year but we have done admirably with the QB and WR haul. Serviceable OL recruits will get a chance to learn and grow behind a solid returning OL. RB's get a chance to grow as well behind this line, but having just 1 in 2013 will hurt. We need some big boys back there especially after losing 2 of 'em 2012's from dumbassedness. Don't forget Jr Marlin Lane was a consensus 4-star and looked good a year removed from ACL. We need a posse of backs in 2014 to make up the numbers. Considering our current situation, I'd give this class' Offensive haul a B+.

Defensively, the DL got upgraded. DT should be fairly solid with Big Dan and BIG DAN in the middle. Losing Dante and Trent was huge, maybe Miller can get some learning time there. Some solid 4-3 DE's got brought in and should challenge for PT against the tweeners we have. Don't think LB is as bad as first glance, since we have numbers. JRM could even play OLB. Secondary was a glaring issue last year (scheme? players?) and that got addressed early and often. Defensive score? C.

We won't see the ill-effects this Fall as we shouldn't have to play too many freshmen. Change of scheme (or any scheme) on D should in itself is an upgrade. Change of scheme on O will affect our season due to chemistry, but not because of the players we got today.

The lost 2012 classes at RB and DT gives us 2 straight years of low numbers at the spots and depth no doubt will need to be addressed in 2014.

I hope everyone maintains this negative mentality, because the football team normally does the opposite of what everyone thinks. Or the past couple years, at least.
