ESPN's Todd McShay: "I think Dobbs got a chance to be a solid starter in the NFL."

Talking bout my best friend...

Glad to see him making the most of this opportunity and showcasing his talent. I believe the entire country is seeing just how special he was at Tennessee. He's a great athlete, a better person, and a fantastic ambassador for Tennessee.

He's a great individual and very special person even if he never plays a down in the NFL. Wishing him continued success.

Dobbs just didnt get the RIGHT QB coaching at UT.... I think he will be SOLID in the NFL as he is TOO smart and once he learns how to read defenses, it will get ALOT easier for him

The quote that stood out to me was "When he got some pro coaching". I don't pretend to know how to coach CFB but a big time program not having an established QB coach on staff seems asinine.

He only had four quarterbacks in tier 1 & 2. His main point was Joshua Dobbs has a very high ceiling that he could ride to a starting spot.

Again, he (McShay) had some nice things to say about Dobbs and that's great. Put in context outside of the OP's quote he's not remotely listed towards the top of the draft expectation. That's not just some nuance.

Actually the draft is somewhat like preseason rankings. Everyone does their best to try and bring a whole slew of variables down to a specific sequential list from high to low. Due to all those variables it's a damn difficult thing to get right to any great degree of accuracy. The only thing that doesn't change is starting higher is better. In the draft you get payed more and with preseason rankings you don't have to claw so far to reach the top or usually drop less from a loss.

Dobbs is very unlikely to start near the top. While that might not pad the bank account as much up front like a lower ranked team that just keeps winning if Dobbs (or indeed any player) keeps acquitting himself then he'll keep moving up. You have to be in the game to play the game and Josh is certainly going to meet that threshold.

I'm wondering if this is going to end the budding bromance. While McShay shares some nice things about Dobbs he doesn't even put him in his "Tier 2" level of prospects.

ESPN Draft Expert Todd McShay Evaluates 2017 QB Prospects

Actually his remarks on Dobbs were pretty glowing. Especially when it comes to how different his perception was of Dobbs after watching the coach's copy of his game film rather than just watching on TV.

I said the same thing about Dobbs. That his teammates really didn't help him. We all know his o-line was terrible but his receivers didn't help him by getting open or having sure hands.

Josh Dobbs will be a SUPERSTAR in the NFL.

It wasn't just the coaching that was terrible. The offensive line was terrible. Receivers and Tight Ends couldn't get open or when they did catch the ball.

Josh Dobbs carried this program on his back for the last 3 years.

Dobbs didn't even have a QB coach at UT. Funny how he gets a little coaching from the NFL and he's getting praised. Jones is a moron for not having anybody working with the most important position on the offensive side of the ball.

Again, he had some nice things to say and, again, that's great. He then put Josh in his "other names to watch" category with Nathan Peterman. Whether you agree or not isn't remotely relevant to the simple observation that whatever McShay thinks of Dobbs he thinks a good deal more of several other players.

I hope you're right about Josh...I rather like the idea of a Vol taking over for the recently departed Manning as Dobbs is the kind of guy that would represent wonderfully even beyond the field of play. However, this idea that you announcing he'll be a superstar not only has no bearing whatsoever to that being a fact you haven't exactly established yourself as a paragon of predictive excellence.

That's cause he's following the herd. To keep up their credibility, these draft "experts" all come out with the same players at the top of their position rankings. That way when they miss, they can say hey everyone else missed as well.

None of these guys are giving you a list of who they really think are the top players. They are just playing follow the leader. The comments they say about the prospects is more telling. The fact McShay is saying Dobbs is underrated and could be a solid starter in the league lets me know that he thinks higher of Dobbs than where he's ranking him right now. Wouldn't surprise me if he thought Dobbs was the #1 QB in this class but is too afraid of stepping out on that ledge by himself. Cause if he does that and Dobbs somehow busts, everyone will be asking him how could do go out on a limb and think a guy no else thought was a first rounder was the best QB in the class.

This guys are about self-preservation more than they are about true rankings.

Failed at EVERY prediction so far. :w00t:

The thing with Dobbs is can he learn accuracy with his passes? That's the most important skill an NFL QB can have. And it just happens to be the chink in his armor. Guys don't often learn that skill

The absolute best quote...

"....when he got some pro-coaching and worked on his mechanics with his feet and timing...."

Wow. It seems that (in some quarters) college football is more about recruiting (and clique' generation) than player development. Why can't UT pay some QB coach to work with guys over the summer if no one else on staff knows what/how to do? Disappointing.

I'd start the second one at every home game. Should increase ticket sales and attendance (thru first inning)

To the poster just above I have read before in multiple places that the majority of pro coaches absolutely dog the quality of college coaching across the board. My guess is they think the emphasis is more on talent acquisition than actual development. And frankly I think you can find some supporting evidence in the rare occasional program that regularly doesn't land the highly ranked recruiting classes yet they field competitive ball teams.

So first it's Dobbs sandbagging to try to avoid being a WR/DB and now it's people's whose job it is to try to be right sandbagging to be "as wrong" as everybody else. I would pay money to see the results of you and a rorschach test.

Ask yourself this; a genie gives an analyst a wish to see the biggest surprise draftee. (ex Prescott from last year) In your world our analyst would keep it on the DL since, you know, he wouldn't want to seem different that the "herd". If you believe that you are an iron-clad idiot.

Literally the absolute BEST thing these guys could possibly do for themselves and their credibility is accurately predict player performance specifically different than others. For the love of God man you're arguing people in a competitive business would prefer to blend than stand out as being better than the rest...calling that nonsensical would be a galactic understatement.

This. Is. Awesome.

Changing opinions to whatever fits or gets the most likes every 24 hours or less. One day you're done with this team, the next you're all about it. One day you don't think a player will make it, the next they're Hall of Fame material. One day people are gullible for listening to an analyst, the next you trust that same analyst.

I take back what I said about you either being insane or a troll.

You're either a troll or a well played scheme by Freak to generate clicks.
