With the looming sanctions and depleted roster, plus the direct effect it will have on recruiting, I don’t think any coach would succeed regardless of who it is.

The best we can hope for in the next 3-4 years is a couple solid wins/seasons and to build a roster foundation for the next guy.

The next hire, hopefully free of sanctions and any major buyout, and with some decent talent, needs to be a grand slam.

Heupel is a great hire for where we are and what we are about to go through. Not the best in the business, but he accepted the challenge and knows he is likely walking into a set up for failure.

I support him.
Yeah I don't see it. He got himself run out of Oklahoma according to some of their fans. He then made a pit stop at Missouri before taking over a stacked roster at UCF, where they've progressively gotten worse since he arrived. Then his buddy offers him the big bucks. I hope he does well for the sheer fact that I love Tennessee. But I'm pretty sure we've been had once again.

How is it possible they hire a coach worse than Jeremy Pruitt?

UT gonna UT

How the hell is he worse than Pruitt? He's 28-8, which is comparable to what Frost hsd when all you geniuses wanted him. This is a really good hire, especially considering what the next HC was gonna walk into. Just please none of you damn idiots start rioting or crap like that. Give the man a chance and be thankful anyone wanted this damn job.

You’ve lost your mind.
12-1
10-3
6-4

That’s called linear regression. He’s not a good recruiter. He’s a poor mans Butch Jones. At least Butch maintained what Brian Kelly built at BOTH of his stops. Heupel couldn’t even do that.

Man. How much is Bama paying Saban? This is the polar opposite of a splash hire.

I wish Heupel the best. Maybe Steele stays as DC.

It seems anyone could've made this hire at any time. I hope he succeeds. Hey - he HAS been a head coach. Check.

We spend $2M + on a new AD and this is what we come up with? Other than Bama, the best football I saw all year was Liberty vs Coastal Carolina. We had our choice of Freeze (I understand why not), Kiffin and Chadwell. From the time we canned Fulmer as HC, this excruciating trip into the abyss of college football programs will span better than 25 years. Best of luck to Danny White and Josh Heupel.

AD White seeks coach to help polish Vols' 'brand'

So UT is paying AD White 1.8 million per year (not including annual 5% pay increase) for 5 years, paid 2.5 million to buy out White's UCF contract and will have to pay Fulmer 1.3 million.

UT is getting Heupel at a cost of about 12.8 million dollars? I think Fulmer could have pulled off a Heupel hire.

EDIT: this did NOT include the $6 million buyout of Heupel's UCF contract. Up to $18.8 million now.

Lol There’s two people I know for a fact that would have wanted the job, and you wouldn’t have to have hired an overrated AD or a search firm to do it. Tee and Steele. We should have mailed it in the next 3 years with atleast a UT guy, instead of paying over 15 million to basically mail in the next 3 years anyways.

Am I thrilled with this hire? No. Am I surprised? No.

We evidently offered a boatload of money to James Franklin (and perhaps others), but the threat of looming sanctions was too much to overcome. DW can’t walk on water ... we’re just not as attractive a job as we used to be. Over the past 15 years, we have made our bed, and we will have to continue to lie in it for the foreseeable future.

I’m disappointed, but I will support Heupel until he proves he’s not the guy. Until then, GBO!
