Tennessee Volunteers: QB Joshua Dobbs



While the rest of the SEC enters the fall grappling with unknowns (or worse, known liabilities) behind center, Dobbs returns as one of the few marquee names. He is tough to corral -- leading all conference QBs with 671 rush yards and 11 TDs last season -- but Dobbs must now prove he can also hit his downfield marks. The senior threw for 200 yards just five times in 2015 and was held under 100 twice. He completed 40.0 percent of passes thrown 15-plus yards in the air, which put him right in the middle of the Power 5 QB pack (T31).

Interesting stat.........In 1998, and that was a good year, Martin completed 57.3% of his passes. In 15 Dobbs completed 59.6%. Kinda surprising.

I think this is right (Dobbs most important player on the team). But it's still so strongly a team sport that we're talking something like this:

Dobbs - 2%
Hurd - 1.5%
Kamara - 1%
Wolf - 1%
Richmond - 1%
Robertson - 1%
Thomas - 1%
Wiesman - 1%
Hall - 1%
Smith - 1%
Malone - 1%
Williams - 1%
Barnett - 1.8%
O'Brien - 1%
KMac - 1%
Vereen - 1%
etc.

It's not like saying "most important player" = he's 50% or even 20% of the team.

It's a team sport. First, foremost, and forever.

And in '14 Dobbs was 63.3 %, and is 60.6 % for his career thus far, which includes freshman year but does not include his most experienced senior year.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go back and check Martin's career completion %.

I think Hurd is just as important as Dobbs, if not more important. Bc of the flaws in Dobbs' downfield passing game, our team relies much more on a good running game. I know Kamara is a very good back, but our offense would take a massive step back if we were to lose Hurd.

Martin was a very inaccurate passer. He had some atrocious games throwing the ball in 1998. However, he was clutch several times in key games to help lead the team to a win. Dobbs, IMHO, is actually a better passer and QB than Tee was. About the only thing he did better than Josh is throw a deep ball.

Nah, most knew Tee didn't have the highest completion percentage and they still liked the guy. The real difference was people could acknowledge this while having adult conversation.
But people were talking more in person then. You never really saw a bratty kid bust in to pitch a fit just because he didn't like what they had to say.

And Tee took many down the field shots.

My response to this article is... DUH
Few teams most important player is someone other than the QB in all reality. The QB is the only skill position player to touch the ball on every down and is tasked to make multiple decisions.

We don't even need Dobbs to be a true threat with the deep ball although it would help. We need him to be a game manager.

He needs to be working on consistency/accuracy between 10-15 yards. That's how you become a great offense especially with our dynamic run game.

I do think even though we had better OL play last year, our pass protection was still bad. Dobbs does not pass well under pressure and his accuracy during roll outs is not good.

In all fairness few, very few QB's pass well under pressure even in the NFL.
I had more of an angst with the lack of separation our WR's got. I think that will change quite a bit this year.

I'm not blaming Dobbs for passing poorly under pressure although he could work on his roll out. I think if we can give Dobbs more time, we will see a better passing game. Now, I agree with the WRs, very underwhelming last year even with some solid talent. If they don't produce this year, you can kiss CZA goodbye. I'm excited to see if Croom comes back and becomes a favorite target.

Always loved brilliant quotes by NFL defensive players intimating that they had figured out a secret "If you put pressure on Peyton, he's not as effective". :crazy: That's EVERY QB! :w00t: Tarkenton,Young,Cunningham, Vick...etc. Got a 200 plus pound body suspending you perpendicular to the ground? Your passing efficiency drops. :loco:

You're underestimating Dobbs importance to the run game.

Because of his running ability, teams have to honor the read option. Thus it gives Hurd and Kamara more running room.

I would argue that Dobbs is even more important to our run game than our passing game.

He makes the entire offense tick.

When you lose your two top receiver (Pig and North), that kinda hurts. I expect to see protection, and WR's to be much improved. At least I hope so.

We should have the opportunity to see this Fall. I think the OL will be much improved and the running game should also be better. It will be unto Dobbs to prove his ability to hit some deep receivers this year. The SEC East and the SEC Championships just might depend on his passing. I really want to see some passes which are throw so the receivers can catch the ball in stride and result in long gains and TDs.

I do not want to hear those who complain about dropped passes. The receivers had to make way too many difficult catches and prevent intrceptions of balls which were thrown behind , in front of, and over their heads.

One article asked "Could Tennessee survive an injury to Josh Dobbs?" - Gridiron Now. Unfortunately we don't know, and to me one of the biggest disappointment of last year's coaching. Nobody saw fit to simply exchange Dobbs and Dormady a few times to see how Dormady would work with the first team rather than with everybody else during garbage time.

I definitely don't want to lose him during that four game stretch. But I would hate to try it without Hurd also.
I think we would have a good shot in all other of the regular season games though.

I don't disagree with the d4h on the importance of Dobbs to the run game, but he needs to realize how much Hurd assists Dobbs also.
From blocking to being a threat they have to watch and can't focus solely on Dobbs. It works both ways.
