ESPN Upstate on Venables

If we’re going with a coordinator I’d rather have Tee over Venables, Steele or Pruitt.

Just curious why? Am I missing something other than the UT connection? He's been an OC for 2 years and rumors may not be true but they point to Helton's brother being the one who actually calls plays. I love Tee but is his resume really better than Venables?

I get that but Venables was the DC that took OU to 2 national title games, 3 BCS bowls. Took Clemson to 3 BCS bowls, 3 Playoff appearances, 2 national title appearances and 1 national title as DC.

Pruitt was a position coach 09-12 at Bama, Venables has a better resume

Pruitt leaves Alabama and wins NC in first and only year at Florida State. First year as a defensive coordinator. Pretty impressive.

Alright, so something has to be stopping people from going after Norvell. I wonder what it is cause he seems like a good fit for the Arky job imo. Seems like there's been no news about schools really pursuing him.

Norvell would be a prime candidate for most programs. My question about him would be his defense. They score a lot, but give up a ton of points. How many would Fla, Bama, Ga. score against his defense?

Pruitt leaving doesnt hurt Bama. Next man up for them and then we end up with a coach with an IQ below 80

Dammit, I had started to settle on Pruitt as my favorite and now I read this. I have trouble believing he's this dumb after putting together top 5 defenses at three different schools. Granted, he had a ton to work with at all three, but he's also a nationally Elite recruiter and should be able to raise the talent level at Tennessee significantly.

Regardless, if we are choosing between Venables, Morris, and Pruitt, I think we get a good coach after all.

I’m hearing that Brent Venables is the guy at Arkansas assuming Tennessee doesn’t come into play.

This makes it sound like he's holding out for an offer from UT, maybe you will read it differently.

In other words, we aren't moving on another quality candidate for reasons no one knows yet...we will eventually find out that our inaction was because we were focused on some crap guy nobody wants. I want Kiff, but Venables would be my second choice.

I'd love Venables as HC, Tee Martin as OC, and Marion Hobby as DC. Hobby and Venables worked at Clemson together. Martin feels like he's coming regardless. That would be an excellent coaching and recruiting staff.

I know Pruitt runs a 3-4, (I know that strikes fear in all UT fans offer the sunseri hire) but what about Venables? Is he more traditional 4-3 base or 3-4 base. I would imagine 3-4 would work well with what we have on the team now.

Hobby may be in play if Morris takes the job as well. They were both at Clemson together.

We can't keep waiting around for an excellent defensive mind like Venables to be snatched up by another school. We need to hire Venables at least by this weekend!

 We haven't been able to keep enough LB's out there for a 4-3. Doubt it would be any easier to put 4 out there for our base D. However, I doubt it makes as much difference as many think since teams are mostly in Nickels anymore, 3-3-5 or 4-2-5.

Darrel Taylor and Austin smith would be olb in 3-4. Bituli would be great inside guy in a 3-4. We would have to find some more bodies for sure, no argument there.

With Gruden and Kelly off the table Venables is my favorite. In my opinion he is a home run hire that's flying just a little under the radar. We need a head coach that requires a get back coach! Go to youtube and listen to some of his post game comments. The guy has is together and knows what it takes to have a successful program. His resume' speaks for itself. He is a huge part of Clemson's success. He can win here!

Either way, I loved watching Nigel Warrior out there this year. He offers a big hitting safety that is valuable in todays schemes where one LB is out.
