ESPN Rumor. Pearl to have big year?

Right. I should say, we don't take a step back as long as we make it to the tournament and maybe win a game. But repeating last year's success without last year's seniors would really send a message that Tennessee is no longer a top 20 type program, but rather a top 10 one.

I hope this happens. I never thought I'd see the day that Tennessee basketball would be a perennial powerhouse. Its getting close to that level.

That idea seemed impossible when I was sitting in TBA with about 2000 others watching Tennessee win one of its 5 games during Wade's final year. 5-22. That still stings.

I remember going to the final home game against Vanderbilt with my room mate when I was in undergrad. If we won the game we would probably make the NCAA tourney. TBA was so empty, even with the black curtains covering most of the upper deck. We walked in 10 minutes late and got to sit in the fifth row in the middle of the court. There were practically no other students there.

And we lost.

Just a couple of years later, I had to wait in line an hour or two before the game if I wanted to have even a shot at a seat in the lower deck. Things changed REALLY fast.

YEAH, YEAH!!! This is great news. I can't wait to start going to school, I am a transfer Senior, just getting out of the Air Force and will be starting the Sports Management degree this fall.

Man this will be an awesome basketball season to come in on!

It's pretty funny that it seems like the hiring of Buzz Peterson is what drove him over the edge.

It's an important one, that's for sure. I could see the season going either way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tenn lost a game or two that they shouldn't in the pre-conf or even early conf schedule. The team is essentially a new team. It may take a while for them to find the "glue" between the team.

I anticipate a vast improvement at the middle to end of conf play and in to the tournies though.
Keeping my fingers crossed!

I kind of think the Vols will have a good to above average year during the regular season, and an elite 8 appearance.

I still remember going to an NIT game we hosted against Georgetown when Buzz was coach. The entire upper level was roped off. There must have been 800-1000 people there. It was more like a scrimmage than a game. Of course, we lost. :bad:

I agree with your posts in this thread completely. I would add that Tobias Harris needs to be drafted high if we really want to be in the top 10. Top 10 programs get Top 10 players and put them in the NBA.

Top 10 programs get Top 10 players and WIN championships with them. The players get themselves drafted, not the programs.

I know. It makes me sick to hear people fawn all over Calapari and how he develops players. People tend to forget how many players on his teams don't even get a sniff at the NBA. The ones that do go were headed there anyway. They were slated to go out of high school no matter what college they went to.:jpshakehead:

Hard to say #92. Who'd say that Orton & Bledsoe were 1st round picks. But then again, were they picked there because of Cal's rep of "producing" Derrick Rose & Tyreke Evans? I can't stand the dude, but his reputation (however ill founded it may be, considering he's the cheat of the decade) might be getting these players drafted.
But saying all that, I would never trade Bruce for Cal or any other coach in the NCAA. Because at the end of the day, its fun watching Bruce coach. And I gotta believe its gotta be just as fun playing for him too.

Case in point. Deandre Liggins. Five star point guard(Rivals).Going nowhere. If it weren't for the one and done rule, Calapari never sniffs Dereck Rose , Tyreke Evans,John Wall, or Eric Bledsoe

Totally agreed... its a vicious cycle. The players go to Cal because he has the rep of getting players into the NBA. But he also just gets handed players who are already on the way. Has he really improved Rose, Evans, Wall, etc. that much? I don't think so.

Orton probably would have been drafted higher than the second to last pick of the first round had he been allowed to come straight out of high school. NBA teams draft on potential and measurables and Orton's got both in spades. You could make a strong argument that his stock would have been higher had he gone to another program where he would have played starters minutes instead of riding the pine behind Patterson and Cousins.

Bledsoe very well could have benefited from Cal's reputation for developing point guards another argument could be made Bledsoe would have been drafted in the same place or higher if somewhere else he got to be the primary person running the offense and not the fourth scoring option. Bledsoe's stock also got a little boost from this being a terrible year for PGs as there were only two taken in the first round.
