ESPN reporting Tennessee is offering La. Tech's White

So we wanted an up and coming young coach with a 20 year record of success who had Tennessee roots, knew the SEC, recruited at a very high level, had a history of multiple NCAA runs deep into the tournament, a few Final 4s, signed multiple 5 star players and coached up unranked players to be lottery picks who stayed in school for 4 years and didn't go pro early. He needs to play a exciting offense with a rugged defense, using a combination of great rebounding, full court pressure, shot blocking, and three point shooting. Every other team in the nation should want our coach, but he should have no history with any other schools. We want to pay him enough to come here, and enough that no one else will ever outbid us, but we don't want to risk paying too much. Oh, but despite his greatness, if another team might want him in the future, we should not hire him. Unless he will come cheap, but that means nobody thinks he is good.

Am I missing anything?

What about his ability to recruit? Because all the checks look really good, but you still need to attract the top recruits and many of those recruits come out of the northeast and midwest.

He's a solid recruiter as well. That's based on what others have posted

BTO, you gotta be excited about this. You were the first person to bring this guy up months ago when it looked like CCM was gonna get axed. Hats off to you.

I would've preferred a Marshall or Shaka sure....but I like White over Pitino, probably Miller, Tyndall etc.

I see him as similar to Butch, in that he will sell the program. He will be visible to fans and get everyone involved and feeling like they're part of the program like you see Butch do.

I could be dead wrong, but that's the feeling I get. Playing an exciting style won't hurt either

5 out of the last 6 coaches have been failures in the minds of our fans, yet we keep going after the same type of guys. Hopefully, Hart has identified a rising star. You are right that Pearl had a long successful résumé that could be used to foretell good things. Not so much with others.

How so?

Wade Houston was a long time assistant.

Kevin O'Neil was at Marquette, I've saw at least 10 Vols say they were the better program than we are just this past week.

Jerry Green was in the Pac 10 at Oregon.

Buzz was this type.

Pearl was a proven commodity with 13 years of high level coaching.

Zo was this type.

So 1 was an assistant, 2 were this type, 3 were established coaches or at major programs.

Idk the guy, but from what I'm seeing people say he's a UT Grad that is close to Hart and has solid info in the past....idk either way.

He's a host of the Midday 180 on 104.5 in Nashville. He's an alum of UT, but has absolutely no closeness with anyone in the administration - he's just a fan. Still a great guy who doesn't usually pass along bad info and a fellow MJ Bear to boot.

I am pi$$ed off that this would leak to the media this way. The only time this should get out to the ol' worldwide leader is when it's time to schedule the presses. Sounds like we are taking too much risk letting it out and having it appear that he is "mulling it over" - cheapens the perception of the job. If White's people leaked it then leave him the crap in freakin' Ruston.

Exactly!!! That is why I was so upset by people on this board that were trashing Hart because they werent hearing who had been contacted. Some assumed that 3 days of no news meant noone wanted job

honestly just don't know enough about this guy. but with our history of hiring la tech coaches, i'm sure he will be great!!! :

White plrob checking out Gettysvue and Cherokee today...seeing as how he is about to become a millionaire.

Ugh... Not sold on his total track record. Too early IMO.

Tony Barbee was a hot name a couple of years back. Look what happened to him .

His first HC job was at UTEP. Did an extremely good job there for 4 years.

Took over the Auburn gig, and totally flopped.

Isn't that the damn truth.

Sheesh... we're hiring a coach,... it's not like we hired LaTech's AD and a coach! .... oh. wait. :)

Just a reminder that White comes from a "compact" AD - at least it was a few short years ago. I have to believe if he is making the NCAAT there, that would most likely be a solid hire.

If I were Mike White and were confident in my ability to Coach & Recruit. The last thing I would be worried about was the fan base, because if the team that hits the floor shows effort and heart the fans will be in his corner. I would jump on that pony and ride ladies & gentlemen! GBO

People I'd happily have hired...

Rick Pitino Senior, even though hiring a coach from Louisville gutted us last time we did it.

Buzz Williams, even though it didn't work out with the last Marquette guy.

Dana Altman from Oregon, though Jerry Green managed to piss everyone off.

The hold up is all about the buyout. He wants a higher buyout to protect himself.
