ESPN Profit Plummets As Network Turns Left

The better question is what should ESPN air? Sportscenter on six channels 14 hours a day isn't the answer, left wing politics isn't it, poker isn't it. What is it?

Seems like the repeat of the Alabama Spring game is popular on several of them

I remember as a kid being home sick from school that they would show repeats of the previous weekends college football games during the weekdays, and they were still doing it when I was college. I remember going back to my dorm one time and they were showing a replay of a Tennessee game.

Maybe they still do that sometimes, I'm not sure.

Espnews and sec network do, not the flagship stations

There isn't a good answer to that question, which is why they are losing subscribers and having to lay people off. I've said before in the thread that these cost cutting measures are an attempt to buy time until they can figure out how to better monetize streaming and adjust to how people consume media differently today than 20 years ago.

It also doesn't help that they got suckered on the 2 recent big contracts they signed for the NFL and NBA. That alone is a reason why your cable bill is as expensive as it is, because in order to make that up ESPN charges far and away the highest retransmission fees to cable companies. Seems reasonable to believe that if your cable bill was less expensive, cord cutting would still be occurring but perhaps not at the pace it currently is, and ESPN would be in a better position to deal with it.

ESPN has a medium problem, not really a programming problem. Their programming is garbage because people aren't watching ESPN's medium (cable TV) like they used to. ESPN has made mistakes and is on the wrong side of a trend, and I don't think there is much they can do other than bite the bullet.

ESPN could save $20 mil annually if they'd dump the putrid Longhorn network. Might even save the big 12 as a by product.

Not really. They'd owe the other party involved for breaking their signed contract.

With the main party alone, they're only about 6 years (and around $71 mil) into a 20 year contract (for $295 mil). In such scenario, they'd owe them a giant sum for breaking contract early...possibly the rest of the contract.

It would ultimately depend on their operating costs.

My statement was akin to a trump tweet, interpret literally at your own peril.

Here is what's happening in a nutshell and why...

They were good.
Then they started to suck.
Then no one did anything to stop the suckage.
Then someone made bad decisions and the suckage accelerated.
They are bleeding money like a lung shot deer.
People were fired.

You're welcome

I think ESPN just expanded way to much. I just recently cut back my direct tv to standard package and I never realized how many channels ESPN has until I only had 2.

They need to stop being political, focus on just sports, hire cheaper/younger news anchors and quit hiring so many damn former athletes. Jesus the NFL show has like 6-7 players and a moderator. Make it a 4 person show and that would cut back 2-3 million a year

I was always a fan of the World Series of Darts and Australian Rules Football.

Think about it. A business model based on making money off of people that never use your service. And then blaming those people for your failures when those people quit paying. Then top that off by pushing a political philosophy that is against the ideas of the paying customers who actually do use your service. :loco:

That's why I still like their online ESPN3 because that's where you still find the more obscure sports (for Americans at least) that they used to show on ESPN at weird hours.

I've watched the CFL, rugby, cricket, even handball tournaments on ESPN3.

Mike and Mike in the morning is no more....

It's about time. They've had a good run. Each is staying with ESPN. Golic will have a show with Trey Wingo and Mike Jr.

Greenie is getting his own show in the AM.
