It seems Tennessee IS still seen as the premier coaching job. The poll is still active, these totals are from when I visited the page.

Poll asks: If Notre Dame were to make a coaching change, which would be the best available job?

Tennessee: 56%
Clemson: 17%
Notre Dame: 23%
Washington: 5%

Total votes so far: 3,476

If you look at the map based on votes, even South Carolina thinks Tennessee is the better job :eek:lol:

I don't know if everyone really realizes exactly what this poll tells us, but its a very good message to get from the entire country.

It sure brightened my day to see that so many people still think our program is respectable after the terrible season we've had. GO VOLS!!! We will rise again!!

The good thing about this is that the national perception of our program hasn't suffered from two poor seasons in four years.

But Tennessee is not the best of those four jobs. If I were a up-and-coming head coach, I'd rather go to Clemson. The fan support and facilities are almost as good, they have plenty of money, they have tradition, they are in a state that produces a lot of D-1 talent and they are in a conference that is lousy and ripe for the taking. On the whole, a coach has an easier path to the national championship at Clemson than they do at Tennessee.

Tennessee has the money, fan support, facilities and tradition, but it doesn't have much in the way of in-state talent and the SEC is a beast.

That said, I hope the coaching prospects that both UT and Clemson are after pay close attention to ESPN. :)

You make good points, but the poll asks what the BEST job is, not "which is the Easiest Road to a Championship Job". If any candidate truly thinks that an HC position at Clemson is a better job than Tennessee, then we don't want them here anyway. The SEC ain't for wusses.

You make good points but I think the bolded part is the reason why the best available coaches would want to come to UT over Clemson...

The best available coaches want to prove they're the best by beating the best year in and year out...they don't shy away from competition...

And they are smart enough to know that if they go to a Clemson and cakewalk to a championship then not only will they not get as much press as they would for winning at UT but they also might face scrutiny for taking the easy way out instead..

To sum it up....the difference in level of competition is a turn on for the best available coaches...not a turn off

Exactly why I think Kiffin wants the job so bad. It's his best way to get back into the NFL. He's young, he wants to be a NFL HC. If he succeeds in the SEC, his next stop is the NFL. :good!:

I have no doubt that Kiffin wants to eventually return to the NFL as a HC. If he finds success with the Vols though, I don't expect him to cut and run immediately. I think he wants to strengthen his resume and credibility as a competent coach after the Raiders debacle. If he ends up being hired I'd look for him to hang around for awhile.

I'm not saying right away. I think 5 to 8 yrs is all we can really expect though.

I'd be happy with 10, as long as he got us some titles in that span. Who knows, in the next 10 years we might need some fresh blood again anyway.

The poll has 8,531 votes now and has...

Tennessee at 55% :pepper::rock:
Clemson at 16%
Notre Dame at 23%
Washington at 5%:mf_surrender::whatever:

I think Tennessee has the best fan support, and the facilities are being worked on. Whoever takes over here will have enough support and money to be able to recruit.
We will just have to wait and see.:zeitung_lesen:

Win the SEC and you have a pretty fair chance of playing for the NC. Winning the ACC, not so much.
