espn on Barnes vs. Smart

Huh? I think the consensus here is that Pitino Jr. has proven nothing and has little to offer other than his name. Very few people would have taken him over Barnes.

As for Smart, we weren't getting him anyway, so whether or not some talking head at ESPN thinks he "works harder" than Rick Barnes doesn't mean a hill of beans. And I'm not sure I buy it anyway. There's a ton of talent in VCU's backyard. He could drive for a few hours in any direction and there's stud players to be recruited all over the place. If he were that awesome of a recruiter, he'd have had more than one-and-done NCAA teams since all the guys from his Final Four run left. He has easy access to more talent than Gonzaga does, or even than Wichita State does.

If you're going to quote me, do it in context at least. I said "All those whining about why we didn't hire a Pitino Jr. or some other young flashy coach"...Pitino was just an example of the "young flashy coach".

The point was that I haven't seen anyone complaining about Pitino Jr. not being seriously considered. Your point is valid insofar as the "young flashy coach" part goes, but the specific example is wrong.

Well, there was a poster in this thread that mentioned why we didn't look a Pitino Jr., who he claimed reached out, among other young coaches of the like. His name is one of the crop of young coaches I've heard some complain why we didn't look at on other sites. So substiture Pitino's name with Prohm, White, Underwood, etc (can't name them all) and my point still stands.

We may have gotten an upgrade in the "not paying players/lying to the NCAA" sense, but not from an actual coaching standpoint. He is past his prime.

I hope I am wrong, I really do; however, the AD failed the university and it's fans with this "search". Holtman reached out, so did Pitino, Jr. Why not have some discussions with those guys, Hurley, Underwood, Wade.
This program would have been better served hiring a coach who has shown an ability to coach up inferior talent, while also not having the resources of a school like TN. AKA, the Butch Jones model. Get a guy in here who is full of energy, has succeeded, and give them the keys to the city. Don't hire the basketball version of 2009 Fulmer, and that's an insult to Fulmer since he won a National Title.

Barnes would have always been there as an option. He should have been plan D, not plan A. Again-he failed at Texas. They have more resources than anyone.

I pray to god he fails here just like he did at Texas. You seriously wanted to consider a Pitino Jr or Wade to Barnes?? Pitino has accomplished nothing other than bing born to his father, and while I think wade will be a good coach someday he hasn't done enough either. This hire was a HR and a no brainer.

He's really underrated imo.

Underated??? He is over rated without a doubt. If his last name wasn't Pitino you would look at his resume and laugh if someone mentioned him for a job like this. Alabama fans have been praying that Battle wouldn't reach for him and they breathed a sigh of relief when he didn't.

A .600 record in a tough conference,a damn good recruiter, he's won everywhere he's been, while he may not be taking teams to the ncaat,he's winning,he's young, not every coach can be a magican right away.

It's relevant since Texas just got a massive upgrade over the coach who they fired that we just hired.

I'm not much of a basketball fan but I'm trying to figure out the love of Smart by looking at his record. Beyond perception of charisma, or style of play, what am I missing?

At VCU, he went to the final four his second year then stalled in the round of 32 for two years, and hasn't gotten out of the round of 64 in the last 2 years. The head scratching comes in when you look at his wins in relation to his recruiting: they seem to be trending in opposite directions.

Granted, 6 years is a small data set, but I don't see anything that suggests Texas is getting anything they already didn't have in Barnes.

you're like the guy who said he didn't want anything to do with Bryce Drew because he was going to have to google that name. If 25+ wins consistently and trips to the Big Dance for a school like VCU isn't enough to convince you he's a good coach, whatever you think about the basketball hire really is invalid.

I just stood up for Shaka Smart, I will now go shoot myself.

When Bama makes their hire there will ba another thread just like this. I wasn't a fan of the Barns hire but he is here now so I will support him.

I think Smart will be very successful at ut, but I don't think he will have instant success, he wil need to get his style of players into the system.

I hope Will Wade gets the VCU job That way we may have a shot at him in 6 years, when we're looking again.

You didn't; I did. "...still wouldn't use the word?" Then, don't. See how simple this is?

Are you serious? I was f'ing with you, genius. I'll bet you're a hit in social situations.

Notice the guys who commented on your response to what I said realized it was a joke.

By a landslide, you would win that bet. Feel all better? Next....

I'll give Shaka 3 years before he's run out of town

My thinking also. Some Coaches (African-American) are given a very short time span to turn a program around. Coach Smart has an advantage in that he has inherited a better team than most coaches get.
