Most of us know we can't get rid of Jones this year and have seen enough of Debord and Dobbs. Shoop deserves a pass because of the shear volume of injuries in his first year as DC. Not may are impressed with the D but it is too early to start calling for his head because of lack of depth. That is all.
Shoop deserves some due to the injuries but not a pass. Our defense, no matter who is playing, has looked the exact same every game, with the exception of the second half vs Florida, since the opening kickoff vs App State. Very undisciplined, can't do fundamental things like playing our gaps inside and setting the edge outside. Our DBs are just bad...as Doug Mathews said Sunday, for some reason, Shoop keeps calling Press man coverage when we clearly can't play that coverage.....our DBs, all of them, get run right past, and not one of them ever turns his head to locate the ball, and that's consistently resulted in one of two outcomes....a deep completion or a defensive pass interference call.
Think on this....we played one of, if not the worst offense in college football this past weekend and literally the only way we could stop their run game was by blitzing and stunting....otherwise, the 118th ranked running game in the country was just completely gashing our defense.
And as was said just earlier, we're in year 4....our second and third string guys should still be quality and ready to play well enough to beat an awful SCar team....but they, and the many first string starters from day one they were playing with, weren't.
Missing 3 of 4 top defensive playmakers is not easy for any team to overcome unless you are you know who. now add 1/2 of the DL out for the season and one dismissed. I cannot think of anyone who has not played so to say the lack of depth is in any way his fault is unfounded.
No Tuttle, no Mckinzey, and no O'brien, add no Maybin, throw in a Jumper and DKJr fresh off an injury and it equals not stopping runs up the middle without run blitzing. When you blitz you have to play more man. We are in defensive desperation mode now.
If it weren't for injuries I would say get him out of here. the secondary is young, inexperienced and just not good, but that falls mainly on CBJ and previous staffs evaluations of these recruits. We had one good CB IMO coming into the season and now we have none.
Unless we have some defensive stud siting on the bench, Shoop gets a pass from me because he had little to do with the current roster.
If we looked like a well coached team with guys in position playing well fundamentally, I could agree 100% with you. But we looked bad and were getting gashed from day one, before all the injuries started to pile up.
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve some slack. But as Doug Mathews said Sunday, why are we still running press man coverage and other schemes that, after 8 games now, we've proved we're just not being able to play?
Btw, we've had significant injuries on the offensive side and nobody is cutting Debord one inch of slack, much less the pass that so many want to give Shoop.
Also, Shoop raved about the roster that "he's had nothing to do with".....he gushed about Barnett, Vereen, Gaulden, Vickers, Kongbo, TKJr and Abernathy, and all those guys have been pretty much all available all season long. He also had OBrien for 6 games before he was dismissed, KMac for 7 games before his injury and Tuttle for all 8 games before his.....yet the defense has been getting gashed and has given up huge splash plays since App State.
That's what position coaches are for. I am far from pleased with all of them. It hard to hide the loss of three star players early in the season with zone coverage using players that have not been coached up and ready. As far as teams taking a shot on our DB's in man I wish Debord would learn something from them. He might if he watched some film.
And Shoop is essentially the boss of the defensive position coaches....it's his job to get errors/problems/mistakes corrected on that side of the ball. And if they go uncorrected/not fixed for the entirety of the season, 8 games to date, it's on ultimately on him IMO, no matter who's on the field. If our guys were in good position but just didn't make plays because they weren't talented enough to tackle superior players, then ok. But they're not even in proper position most of the time.
And again, I get and acknowledge the injuries on defense. But how were we playing any different with all our starters on field early in the season vs playing with some of their backups now? I don't believe I've seen any difference at all.....still getting gashed up the middle, still getting beat to and run around the edges/perimeter, still getting beat over the top, still not creating any turnovers.
And lol that you would take the occasion to, like everybody else, take a shot at Debord by saying he should go deep more often on offense after watching our DBs under Shoop get constantly and consistently burned deep. Wow.
