ESPN Blog post on Dooley and the defense...

Through five games, the Vols are 13th in the SEC in total defense, surrendering 425.8 yards per game, and join Arkansas as the only teams in the league to allow more than 2,000 offensive yards this season.

Ouch. I was so excited about Sal. I am beginning to wonder.

Backfield pressure will not win games if your secondary cannot make solid contact with the ball carrier. You cannot succeed with arm tackling in the SEC. I hope Sunseri figures out how to contain on the corners sometime really soon.

In his defense, I think Sunseri knows how. The players need to shed a dang block and quit getting sucked in. IMO

I am glad Dooley is not using the scheme change as a crutch and is admitting that we are not playing up to the standard we need to be.

That is something he as the Coach should be able to fix THIS SEASON.

We may not be winning games, but intangibly the players and the coaches have been much easier to root for this season, IMO.

Georgia's attack was boosted by the play of running backs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, who combined for 294 yards and five touchdowns. Touchdown runs of 75, 72 (both by Marshall) and 51 yards were particularly worrisome for Dooley when he looked at film.

"When they have three runs for over 200 yards, you can overcome any scheme with just playing good old effort and toughness," he said.

Forget coaching and technique.......

I think effort and toughness would allow us to shed blocks and get to the ball carrier more agrgressively, so I agree with Dooley that effort and toughness could have stopped some of the long runs...

Actually I think its our lack of speed to purse the play correctly and win the "angles" war....we seem to do okay tackling if we're there in position to make the play...and speed is hard to "coach up"....

.....the most damning thing about the defense is that they are out of position when they give up TD's.....coaching.....period!

We have 2 major problems on defense which are causing multiple problems elsewhere. We can't generate any pressure whatsoever w/o blitzing and players are either too stupid to know their gaps or else just won't stay in them. These two issues are causing problems with setting the edge (which has been a major breakdown every game) and then the safeties are either having to lung trying to make arm tackles or even worse chasing (but rarely catching the guys with the ball.) SET THE DAMN EDGE, and PRESSURE THE QB, football 101.

Well in our two losses there are a couple of things that have stood out to me.

First Teague just shouldn't ever be on the field. Not trying to be mean to the kid but he just doesn't possess the speed needed to play d back in the sec. And it's not just that. The fumble he ran past against Florida is just dumbfounding. If he picks it up and walks in we very well could've won the game. But the other huge plays we gave up in the second half were all against him as well.

Then against Uga it seemed like on several occasions Uga had third and 4-6 and our corners are playing off the receiver like 10-12 yards. I think even the announcers made comments about this. They were very easily able to convert several of these and go on to score td's. It's like we were taking the bend but don't break approach. But I don't think that's what it's supposed to mean. We can't just give teams first downs. If we get beat deep so be it but that is a much more difficult play to complete than having our defender off the ball 12 yards.

So in conclusion don't tell me we don't have the depth ect...we have much better personelle this year than last we just aren't very well coached. As always

You can't cite any group that isn't getting whipped. The DL, LB's, and DB's are ALL getting beaten on a regular basis. That's still on the coaches as well as the players but he's right. It does not seem to be a scheme problem at all.

He said in the post-game report that the big plays were given up vs the base D. They weren't supposed to be doing anything except play their responsibility. Maybe its time to shake up more than just safety.

These guys have been balling their whole lives. They should know how to get off a block.

Not if they are being dumbed down :eek:lol:

Practicing it makes perfect. Even Peyton Manning & Tom Brady have a QB coach bro.

If DD blamed the scheme he would be cutting his own throat.

I have a problem with this. We didn't bring this chump here to practice his craft. I thought he came here cause he knew what the heck he was doing. This is Vol country a proud history and hertiage. Its time for a winner to come to town.
