ESPN likes the teams that make them money.

CLK is going to change that.

They don't hate Tennessee, they hate "Hatvol96", that is why they had game day at BYU. :espn:

As others have said, ESPN focuses on the teams that will get them the audience. The ones that are doing very well consistently over the last few years, as well as the flavors of the month. Tennessee is neither right now. It doesn't mean ESPN hates you, there's just not as much of a national interest story here right now.

I think that ESPN is in an enviable position. They make money no matter what. All they need is noise/talk/controversy. It can be noise because we are good. It can be noise because we are bad. It can be noise because they hate us. It can be noise because somebody else thinks they like us too much.

They are like the stock brokers of Sports information. They make money when you buy, when you sell, and when you hold.

Once again we find out we're in the wrong business !

Why do you guys give them such props and respect. ESPN sells because of people like those who starts threads....the network thrives 'the fan', it gets you watching them constantly. Few of the ESPN guys have consistency, but that's the nature of their business.
IF THEY WERE PREDICTABLE WOULD YOU WATCH THEM AS MUCH?

Not to mention: why should UT have their respect right now anyway...let's beat a ranked team and then they'll talk more about our return to 'Tennessee Football' instead of whether we're going to wear the home jerseys this week or not.

I teach with some guys that played HS ball with former Vol Spencer Riley. They seem to think that some of the disdain comes from an incident in which Riley wore a CBS hat for a NC interview for ESPN back in 98. We were actually just talking about that earlier this week.

I believe many people think it started before 98 (like the 97 heisman)

EVERY single school in the damn country thinks that ESPN "hates them". Its ridiculous. If the anchors dont constantly kiss a teams butt, then they have an "agenda" against school X. OSU fans up here think ESPN hates them. If you go up to Michigan, they think the same thing. Stop off in GA..yep, ESPN hates them too. The only school that doesnt currently think this is UF....and thats cause EVERYONE is slurping them at the moment cause they are #1. Individual anchors may have their preferences (they are human after all) but to think an entire network has something against one particular school is tired, IMO. We start winning and all the bad articles from ANY of the networks will stop.

Looks like Corso may have knew what he was talking about.

I saw that too ... 'ol Kirk Herbstreit couldn't stop laughin. I can't believe Coach said that. As far as the whole ESPN hating us thing ... Let's win a few key ball games and maybe the opinion will change.

I don't think it's a huge stretch.. It is pretty RARE when the espn crew says anything truly positive about UT.. not that I care.. but you can almost see stars in the eyes of the talking heads when they talk about USC of timmy tebow. It will be interesting when urbis is an also ran in the college world.. and the treatment he then gets.

On another note.. Didn't the "trailer trash" comment come into being at the Orange Bowl when we were playing Nebraska? I wasa at that game and I remember a HUGE ruckus among UT fans and seeing a sheet with a phrase that said something like "Trailer Trash says go to hell Chris fowler".. or something like that. All I DO know is that he has never apologized for that, and maybe since we have never forgotten that HE said it has added to the espn dislike of UT.

I can understand that. The problem is that a lot of UT fans brought the wrath of ESPN on the University. Like the vast majority of fan bases, we have too many idiots who are spending only their second generation of walking upright.

I don't remember the context of Fowler's comments, but it was before the time Manning played his last game in the Orange Bowl. However, you are incorrect on the apology part. He did give one (half-hearted at best), but UT fans have not forgotten about it. Some will never forgive the network for that little commercial they ran. I remember they declared a truce after the uproar.

Before this you had ESPN writers running false stories on the academic credentials of a few players after the nat'l championship run -- which, in turn, resulted in lawsuits. In addition, you had UT fans barraging the network with death threats.

There's blame to go around, but to give "us" a pass and think ESPN is engaged in some sort of conspiracy against the University is not using logic and reasoning. Don't get me wrong, though, there is plenty of douchebaggery going on up in Bristol, CT. At the same time, reading through many of the posts on VN every day makes me :cray: for the future of our country. Many of these people claim to possess a high school and college education.

No conspiracy...just poor judgement on ESPN's part. Instead of reporting and commenting on football, they ran a campaign to get Woodson the Heisman Trophy. I don't think it was anything against Tennessee, just that they thought it would bring variety to the Heisman race by having a defensive player win it. Unfortunately for UT fans (and for the integrity of ESPN), Peyton Manning was left out. That is simply an injustice and an embarrassment for one of the greatest QBs of all time to get beat out by a very good defensive back. I do recall watching more than one Michigan game in 1997 where Woodson was burned for long TD passes; however, when SportCenter ran highlights, they conveniently failed to show those plays. They did someho manage to show Peyton getting intercepted. Yes, ESPN's campaign for Woodson was the reason Peyton didn't win the Heisman.

For Tennessee to be one of the winningest college football program for the past 75 - 80 years (we used to be #1), I find it curious as to why we haven't won the Heisman a single time. Compare us to similarly successful teams and name just one other team in that group that doesn't have one (I haven't actually looked...just guessing). Johnny Majors was beat out by Notre Dame's Paul Hornung who led the Irish to an impressive 2-8 season. Heath Shuler came close, but probably didn't deserve the Heisman. And then there's Peyton Manning.

I'm sure that in retrospect, ESPN sees that they erred in the selection of "their" candidate. Too bad it was at the expense of such a great player and person as Peyton and to a lesser degree at the expense of the University of Tennessee.
