Tennessee signee Eric Gray (171) isn’t a big, powerful back but he showed the kind of elusiveness you need as a smaller ball-carrier when he made Nolan Smith miss in the hole, spinning out of a tackle and getting to the second level. His burst and acceleration have been popping.

I always felt Garner was a true "scat back". I'm not sure Garner had more straightline speed necessarily. Garner's ability was to cut and then he hit his top speed in about two steps. It was hard for defenders to get a good angle on him in space.

I agree. Garner could stop and start, stutter step left then right and then hit a hole with a burst. I'm not for sure about his in line speed (obviously it was good enough) but to me his strength was his cut-ability if you will. Wow we had some great backs during that era...

Gray weighed in at 198lbs. He’s not small at all even in the pictures next to other backs. In an interview he said Pruitt & co. want him around 205 playing weight.

He’s not small. Rivals evaluators are just a bunch of half meatballs.

I knew Marc's family from work in Antioch. He was a track star. I still carry a white 22 jersey. He doesn't remind me of Marc but I do like his build: 5'8" 197. Maurice Jones Drew was 5'7 205.
