Eric Berry's future / Peyton status?

If he comes back for a 4th season we can consider it. But first he needs to play this season. In my book...he's good but not "legendary". Yet.

Fact: Chants of "air-RIK bare-EEE" have occurred several times at Neyland.

Question: Did Neyland ever chant "pay-TON man-ING" during a game?

I believe the answer is no, though I could be mistaken. Draw whatever conclusions from that which you may feel appropriate.

Inside the UT family, at the same point in their careers he is on par with Peyton. As for the entire career, he could be at, below or above. Time will tell. I can tell you outside of the UT family, Eric Berry is in no way on par with Peyton at this point. I live in the ST. Louis area and travel the entire country for business and it just isn't close.....as of now.

I also think it is hard to compare a QB with any other position. That is not fair to Eric.

Peyton was a CFB legend while Berry is just a Tennessee legend for now in my book. If, IF EB comes back for his senior year and helps bring home a ring, he should be a household name by the time the media is done with him.

I could easily see him staying because of several reasons: he wants a degree, he loves this team, he is a leader on and off the field, he is a rockstar around here, and maybe most importantly, his family doesn't need him to go pro to pay the bills.

The rockstar factor is the biggest reason. No matter how good Berry is in the NFL, he will never come close to matching the ridiculous rockstar celebrity status he has at UT. He may or may not realize that. If he does, maybe he'll stay.

man a thread about eb's future should end up with several million posts because this kid's future is endless...i foresee one more year at ut with a top 5 heisman finish after we win ten games, top 3 draft pick, 12 all-pro years, hall of fame induction, and then he will take his rightful place as emperor of the world and rule over us all with a firm but benevolent fist.
Are you talking about EB or Rod Wilks????

I honestly don't think Peyton was truly a "CFB Legend". Peyton is an NFL legend who played well in college, but at the time, people wondered if he was even the best QB in college...

He was the best QB in college, he finished 2nd in the heistman race. Ryan Leaf is a modern day tragedy.

To have "Peyton Manning" status, EB will have to GREAT success at the next level also.

Who think this now or who tought it then? At the time, it was definitely up for discussion. Now it's obvious who the best was, but for "CFB Legend" status, he pales in comparison to the legends.
In college, he wasn't an Archie Griffin. Hell, he's techncially no Tim Tebow. He was great in college, but if you did an All-American list of all time COLLEGE football, he probably wouldn't make it into the top 10-15 list for the position.

I'm not trying to knock Peyton. Believe me. I'm just being realistic.

Edit: SI puts him at #10. I find it debatable, though.

Taylor Mays stayed for his senior season, as well as Malcolm Jenkins last season. But, Mays and USC plan on making a NC run next season, and Jenkins and Ohio St. planned for that this past season, but were unsuccessful.

We won't be in the position to be favored for a NC in two years, but with Tebow graduating and Urban Meyer maybe leaving for Notre Dame, the SEC will be more open. And if we have a shot at the SEC Championship, we have a shot at the NC.

EB is a team leader, so I would not be surprised if he'd stay in favor of a shot at a SEC title. But, he'll at the very least be a SEC Legend after this season. He'll be the SEC record holder in INT return yardage, and is the favorite to win Thorpe. Possibly even the Bednarik too. Either way, he deserves nothing but the best.

Eric Berry is one of my all time favorite Vols regardless of what he does in the pros. Heath Shuler is one of my all time favorite QBs him and Manning. But I think Manning represents what college football is all about. Instead of coming out his Junior year he stayed for his senior year and I think it paid for him to do it in the long run due to the extra reps.

Newsflash: Eric Berry already holds the alltime record for interception return yards in the SEC, and needs only 15 yards for the NCAA record. Eric Berry is making one hell of a case for being the best college safety of all time. That said, that doesn't mean he'll be a great pro. Just an unreal talent at free safety in the collegiate ranks. As for the Peyton Manning bit, Peyton wasn't an unreal talent in college. He became magnificent when he hit the pro level. And time will tell if that was the talent around him, or his own skills. I love Peyton, and he is the best QB in Tennessee's history, but he probably isn't a top ten collegiate QB.

lets talk about when he leaves.....

no matter when it is JJ and darren myles will have at least 1yr to learn from EB and monte... although no one can replace an eric berry the talent dropoff won't be insurmountable(sp?) and from what we"ve heard both of these guys are VERY talented and will be solid at safety after he is gone....

he will leave and it will suck, but we'll actually be ready to go at his position

Peyton no doubt had some incredible numbers at Tennessee. Stats-wise he was by far one of the best here and one of the best in the SEC all-time. However he choked during the big games. NEVER BEAT FLORIDA (inexcusable), destroyed by Nebraska, lost to Memphis. You cannot be considered one of the best ever in college with crap like that on your resume.

I give the best UT qb title to Tee Martin. 1998 undefeated. Beat Florida. Beat Florida State, Beat Georgia, Beat Alabama.

I hate to say it but Warfell and Teabags were WAY better college QBs than Peyton. They won the big games in college. Period. Teabags will be considered top 3 college players ever! It's really hard to argue with his college career, it's simply amazing. This is coming from a person who cannat stand Teabags. His career will simply stall out in college. Enjoy it now Timmy while it lasts.

Peyton of course has the last laugh, because his career meerly started in College. It truly blossomed in the NFL where he finally one the big game and won the Super Bowl. He will go down as one of the best QBs ever in the NFL, even though he was great in college (but not one of the best). That's OK. Hell look at Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisburger...

Eric Berry on the other hand will go down as one of the best ever in college history for his position. It's hard for a guy in the secondary to win the big game (they are not in a position to command that type of influence over the game). He is the best to ever play his position in UT and SEC history already at the end of his sohpomore career. If he keeps it up he will be the best all-time in NCAA.

I have never seen a guy in my life do the things he does on the college level at his position. I have never seen a guy his size hit as hard as he does time and time again. He is simply the best UT player I have seen this decade.

And he desreves it. He got robbed this year. I can't believe they awarded the player at THE Ohio State over Berry. Just ridiculous.

I'm still pissed over that snub. His stats were clearly much better than Jenkins'. How is EB's shoulder rehab coming, anyone know?

If he leaves next season, they will and should name a street or something after him. If he stays he will be mentioned with the likes of Peyton/ Reggie as one of the great all time vols. I think hes all ready the best safety we have ever had and we have had some good ones.
