I mentioned in a thread about our D needing a Bob Sanders type. Yes it was his first game and all, but am I the only one who is nearly wetting himself over Eric Berry and the potential? (Got plenty of Depends, thanks...:) ) Seriously though...he seemed to be in on most plays, and he played fearlessly. He laid the wood when he had the chance. He did not back down at all. Maybe he needs to step up in a leadership role and show everyone how to do it. Him starting at SS this week tells me something. I have this feeling that him laying someone out will become my avatar in the VERY near future.

I meant from the standpoint of being fearless and letting it rip. The potential here has me almost wanting to stand up and do a jig.

Not to rain on your parade but he'll be a CB by season's end with McKenzie stepping in at SS and Berry replacing Gaines.

I get what you're saying. He's hell on wheels. A damn good ballplayer

Hey, if McKenzie can learn it and get in at SS, I'll be just as giddy. Even more so. Them and Hef on the field at the same time...I'll be ready to see some WR's getting laid out. I really believe the secondary will be our strong point soon. I know, I know...our D-line fits nowhere into the equation, BUT given all the worry and speculation before the season began about our secondary...I believe we have something special in the making.

I agree to a point. But it doesn't matter how good the DBs are if QBs have all the time in the day to throw or if they can gain 6 yards per carry.

Granted DB's cannot cover all day long...and I too do not want our DB's being the leading tacklers on the team...I was just trying to find something positive. :)

exactly. DB's don't dominate on the collegiate level like they can in the NFL. D Lines are all the difference in college ball. Our very own history over the past few years is ample proof of that.

really? Charles Woodson was the reason they dominated? That was a dominant team that beat WAZZU to win a nat'l title.

Come on. The guy returned a big punt and a big interception.

If Terry Fair had got to play offense some, he would have been a much better candidate for Heisman than Woodson.It still is the biggest travesty in college football. Even Lou( I'm an idiot and look like granny clampett) Holtz said that it was one of the most ridiculous things that he had ever seen.

Dre' Bly had almost twice as many interceptions as a Freshman than Woddson did that year.

if the secondary is good enough, chavis will trust them enough to incorporate more line backer blitzes (sp?).

If Chavis allows the rest of the opponents to double team the DL without blitzing... then they won't improve one bit.

If OTOH he makes adjustments and makes them pay for blocking 4 guys with 6 or 7 then everyone may be amazed at the transformation.

Hey Vol Fans; Someone far wiser than I once said:

One man can not make our defense although I was more impressed with Eric's effort than anyone in the defensive backfield. Frankly, I was very disappointed in Hefney. Based on his play last year, I had really expected truly great things from him. He still has time to shine.:salute:

Let's hope Hefney gets back his form to compliment the play from Berry. Lets hope even more that we get a solid performance from the entire defense.

Now, that said, let's remember that those guys in the orange and white are still our favorite team. Let's keep our criticism to the point of encouraging improvement and not simply to belittle or sound like we are as wise as a tree full of owls. These young men know how they played and the want to win even more than we want them to win. :rock:

Beat me to it Dan, although he did infact miss some tackles, he was obviously no where near 100% but he was still going balls to the wall and still managed to rack up 8 tackles...
