Marsalous Johnson left the spring as the starter on one side, and at the moment he looks like he'll hold onto that spot. What's not as clear cut is who'll start opposite him, but the notion that a true freshman could open the season as a starter at corner is gaining some steam after Eric Berry's play in Saturday's scrimmage.
It's not as though Antonio Gaines has had a bad camp, in fact he's probably given the coaches some confidence in him, but Berry has turned heads from day one and is something special. Nothing is set in stone there, but don't bet against Berry starting from day one of his Tennessee career.
I heard he is already slated to start for the Cal game, is this true? Also what is everyones opinions on the first scrimage compared to last years?
#1 CB recruit in the country. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if berry starts, that says far more about your lack of existing talent and experience at CB than it says about Berry himself.

That may be true.....however, Cal receivers didn't do a darn thing last year, and smart money says that ain't gonna change this year....(until we meet up with SEC caliber recievers).
Lol at Thompson's wikipedia pageEric Berry is not Syd'quan Thompson.
Burned by WikipediaAfter redshirting his freshman year, Thompson made his debut on September 2, 2006 against the Tennessee Volunteers offense. He was called up weeks before to replace Senior Tim Mixon, who tore knee ligaments in training camp and joined the injured reserve for the season. Because Mixon was such an integral part of the Cal Bears pass defense, many Golden Bears fans were expecting Thompson to perform brilliantly in lieu of Mixon. Unfortunately, Thompson was repeatedly attacked, torched, and discarded by a surprisingly reenergized Volunteers offense. Erik Ainge threw two passes for touchdowns to Robert Meachem, both times causing Thompson to miss a tackle and slip badly. Although announcers claimed that he could not handle tall wide receivers being only 5'11" in height, it is suspected by many that Thompson simply was not capable of handling a starting spot at cornerback
i don't have any misconceptions about our secondary, but at the same time, this kid is not the ordinary freshmen we are used to having that needs a year or two before becoming that impact player. EB will be just fine........#1 CB recruit in the country. under normal circumstances, i would be inclined to agree with you........however, i don't think this is the "normal" freshman.......the kid can play.
