Eric Berry. Thorpe Finalist

They list him as a corner though =\

I mean, I know he can cover like one, but he is still a safety.

Berry should definately win it with they year he's having.

Jenkins - 3 INT, 54 Tackles

Berry is a stud. Plain and simple. He will have a good college and NFL career.

If that Ohio State guy wins it, i'll give up on ESPN being "non-biased".
Uh why? Sure he doesn't have as many picks or tackles, but he barely gets thrown at. He's the best lockdown corner in the country. The only way he gets tackles is maybe one off of his man a game, and the rest in run support or getting another guys man down.

How is this even close..

It's hard to rack up stats when teams won't throw at you often.

The best CB in the NFL has only 24 tackles, 1 INT, and 6 deflections. Nnamdi Asomugha has only been thrown at 13 times all year.

Jenkins is about the same way, except he's been thrown at slightly more. He's still far and away the best CB in the country though.

Pretty convincing, but I dont think its a lock.

1. The media loves USC.
2. Jenkins has been getting hype since last year.
3. The other two players play on very good teams. Berry doesnt.

It's a lot easier to get picks and tackles when your playing Center Field compared with just covering one man on one side of the field.

I understand what your saying, and agree 100%.
But if voters don't recognize Berry's 7 ints and 265(37.8/int) after netting 5 for 222(44.4/int) in 2007, they need to redefine what the award is for.

Eric Berry is THE highlight of the 2008 season!

Thanks for being the Vols leader, Eric!!!

And, thank goodness you were born with orange blood!!!

You can still win a championship at UT. Help recruit some athletes like you to play offense, and whoever shows up to coach at UT should be in great shape to help you realize OUR dreams!

Go Vols!

It is true that good CB will be thrown at not very often; safeties from a dominating defense usually don't have great stats; argument like these can go on and on.

But I am not convinced that either Jenkins or Mays has done more than what a good football player, say a Thorpe Award Semifinalist has done. Eric is different because he is leaving his name in NCAA college football history. Breaking SEC and NCAA records is the only "Hard-criteria," and only Eric got it.

PS: isn't Mays a FS, who is supposed to have more chance to perform than a Eric (a SS)?

Well the award is for best DB, not just most picks or most dynamic or anything.

Berry should win, but Jenkins deserves a few votes.

Also, the thing about Mays was that I think he was hurt some, plus he's got Kevin Ellison taking away some of his production.

To be honest, Mays is probably the biggest freak athlete in the country, but thats it at his point. Ellison, on his own team is out performing him.

Also, I don't think Mays and Ellison really have set safety positions. They both float around and do everything really.

Mays is not the freak that his 230lb frame would lead people to think. Saying that i do believe he is a very good Safety.

Any clues as to why Macho Harris wasn't on this list?

6'3
226 pounds
4.32 forty
41 inch vertical
11'4 broad jump
26 reps @ 225 pounds

The dude really is a freak.

Plus if Pete Carroll says hes the best player he's ever had, you know he's good.

And I don't know. Macho is a beast too, but it's probably hype. Berry, Mays, and Jenkins are probably the most hyped DB's anyways.
