Eric Berry: Things will change guys, I promise/Eric got screwed (merged)

My email, just sent to the Thorpe people:

To whom it may concern,

The people in charge of awarding the Thorpe Award have made a mistake. This mistake dishonors Jim Thorpe and the very reason why the award is given. This mistake also dishonors Eric Berry and all that he has personally given to honor collegiate athletics. By the end of his career at UT, if you do not already feel ashamed for what you allowed to pass this evening, Eric Berry will prove to you that you needed his name in your record book this year, and here are a few reasons why:

1. The University of Tennessee is tied 8th nationally for interceptions with 17. Eric Berry is responsible for 7 of those interceptions, or 41% of them.

Ohio State University is tied 11th nationally for interceptions with 14. Malcolm Jenkins is responsible for 3 of those, or 21% of them.

2. Eric Berry plays for the University of Tennessee, which is ranked 4th nationally in total defense despite having the 115th best offense in the nation.

Malcolm Jenkins plays for Ohio State University, which is ranked 8th nationally in total defense, and 78th nationally in total offense.

3. Eric Berry has defended 13 total passes, while Malcolm Jenkins has defended 12. It's the difference of 1, but Berry is still the winner in this category.

4. Just a summary:

Jenkins - 3 INT, 7 INT Yds, 0 INT TD, 1 Sack, 32 Solo Tackles, 22 Asst. Tackles, 9 Pass Deflected
Berry - 7 INT, 265 INT Yds, 2 TD, 3 Sacks, 44 Solo Tackles, 28 Asst. Tackles, 6 Pass Deflected

5. Eric Berry is 14 yards away from breaking the NCAA record for career INT return yardage. Jenkins career numbers are nowhere near that.

6. Eric Berry has more INT's in 2 years than Jenkins has in 4.

I call for a change to the entire body of people in charge of this award and the way it is handled. It is clear that they do not care enough about the award for it to continue to be considered prestigious and honorable. Maybe they're too busy with their full-time jobs, or maybe they're busy with their family life, but the people at the top did not invest enough time to review the facts and name the proper winner of this award, who is Eric Berry.

I am not denouncing the feats of Malcolm Jenkins. He is a fine athlete who honestly came up short, whether you consider lifetime numbers or the numbers strictly from 2008. He was given this award based on the lack of mathematical education from the committee that decides the winners. I feel so bad that Jenkins was misled into believing that he is the nation's best collegiate defensive back, but the numbers show that Eric Berry is by far the best DB in the NCAA, whether you consider the entire 2 years he has been playing or if you only consider 2008.

You can call me crazy and laugh me off. You can say I favor UT and then write me off. But when the numbers are staring you in the face and the people in charge allow a mistake of this magnitude to happen, there can be only one thing to be done and that is to replace all in charge. Besides, they all have full time jobs anyway; what do they care? I know it won't be done, but it needs to be done.

I appreciate your time and hope for a speedy revision of management of the Jim Thorpe award, and especially for Jim Thorpe's sake, and for the sake of players in the future.

Thank you,

Wrong, just wrong. Jenkins should not even be in the top 5.

just watched his highlights, Jenkins is a great athlete and player, no question......but it's like they gave it to him for plays through his career or something, bc/ this year his stats are pathetic compared to EB.......

I find it hard to dislike a guy who does nothing but win football games and proclaim Jesus Christ in front of the world.

If you don't like him just because he's a great player and plays for a team that annually whips our butts then you will also have to dislike anyone that is a great player on any team other than UT. You probably hate Jay Barker too. Do you think that Mississippi State fans should hate Eric Berry or Vandy fans should hate Peyton Manning?

I just don't see how carrying yourself with class and dignity and proclaiming your faith on national television makes you a tool.

As a matter of fact, I was very proud, as a christian, to see Tebow boldly telling others about Jesus Christ. From all I've seen, he lives the life that he talks about. I applaud that and wish we had guys on our team like him. Who wouldn't want Tim Tebow as the QB of their team? One thing is for sure and that is that Tim Tebow is a winner and can carry a team on his shoulders when he needs to.

If liking Tim Tebow makes you a tool, then I'm proud to be a tool.

Exactly. Prance around in your jorts and have a good old time with Tebow's greatness. Sports has nothing to do with religion.

In the ESPN article Jenkins said this-

"This is something I've had my eye on for some time," Jenkins said. "And it's not just about stats. If it was, I wouldn't be here. It's about leadership, and setting an example, too. You can't imagine what this means to me. I was a semifinalist last year, and I've wanted to win it ever since."

When a man like Tebow uses his platform to spread the Gospel, I have to applaud it. As far as religion goes, it really has nothing to do with the Gospel and living for Jesus. Religion is way overrated and, when added to a dollar, will get you a coke from the machine. Tebow seems to have a personal relationship with Christ and doesn't seperate his faith from any other aspect of his life. You see, when God is in your heart, you live it 24/7 and can't help but let it out no matter where you are or what you are doing.

Apparently, you have a problem with Tebow being great. I guess that being great makes you a tool. He has been nothing but Humble in his responses to the media. What is the guy supposed to do, not show up to the awards ceremonies and decline the publicity and accolades? You should admire him for not acting like a tool when in the spotlight.

You've got it backwards and need to look closely at why you actually dislike the guy because there is really not much there to dislike.

Then once again, why wasn't our dentist given the award instead of the Big 10 guy? Because if I'm a D-lineman playing with EB, I'm wanting to rush the QB harder to hope he throws the ball up. Hopefully, EB gets it and returns for a TD. Also, with 2 TD's on 7 INT's, there's a 29% chance that will happen if EB gets the ball.

My point - EB leads by example, on and off the field. And he's only a sophomore.

Go suck your moms nipple more. Sorry if this is rude or has already been said, just started reading this thread after work, but if you can't understand what a tool Teblow is than YOU are such a tool. You are not a Vol if you can even stand seeing Teblow on TV.

explain it then......how exactly is tebow a tool? i'd love to hear your answer. i hate florida with a passion, but i respect tebow for the kind of person he is both on and off the field. he is a great athlete and role model.

jenkins should give eb the award then kiss eb's feet. jenkins should credit the award for his choice of school.

That was just pitiful. Espn is a farce and always has been. I want to know how EB could be up about fifteen percent on their STUPID website, then lose to a guy with half his stats. Also a guy that almost broke the alltime interception return yardage record. Boycott espn's sorry butts. Their all a bunch of yankee biased assclowns. Screw all of them.

I e-mailed espn and posted in the thread that someone posted here earlier. Eric Berry got robbed big time. No excuse that he doesn't win this award.

How did The Mannings vs. Tebow and Berry come out? Did they part the waters or just play on top?

How on earth did this generate 340+ responses?...

What the heck were y'all drinking last night...

This thread is just the start. This will live well beyond the night.

Berry will put it behind him--and I agree, if he has another season remotely close to the one he had this year, he'll win the award hands down.

Still, he deserved to win it this year, unambiguously, but simply got screwed by an overpopulation of Big10 sports journalists and their biased and often derivative effects on the world of college football.

Those Big 10 journalists are the TO's of the sports reporting community... always pumping their own agenda and putting everyone else down in the process. Why would anyone with such bias in the popularity vote ever want things like championships or awards decided on the field?

nothing personally. I just hate how they / he act like his poo dosent stink. he is anything but humble, and needlessly circumcising a bunch of African orphans dosent make you a great guy it makes you a chode.

They were Phillipinos, not Africans. And ministers across the world. Getting 1,000's of people closer to God, and giving of yourself to help less fortunate makes you a "chode?" Guess I'll have to look up chode in the dictionary. Something tells me I will see a picture of you there.

While I do think it's a little tough to compare stats directly between a safety and a corner, there's no doubt that EB is simply a superior player than this Jenkins kid.

The Thorpe (supposedly) goes to the most outstanding DEFENSIVE BACK...last time I checked, strong safety is a defensive back and the fact that Berry was so versatile that he owned in run support (and he laid some pretty effin hard shots, just ask Noshow) AND managed to intercept that many passes...he was a more complete player at his position.

I mean, quite literally, EB kept us in games from his SAFETY position...probably actually won more than a few lol.

how does malcolm jenkins win the thorpe award over berry??? Compare the statistics

Jenkins- 3 int (7 yards), 54 tackles, 9 pass brk ups, 3 FF
Berry - 7 int (265 yards), 72 tackles, 6 pass brk ups, 3 sacks...

Can someone please explain this to me?

Interesting, Ben. So, are you suggesting Berry was screwed?

Glad you started a thread so that we could open this up for discussion.
