My email, just sent to the Thorpe people:
To whom it may concern,
The people in charge of awarding the Thorpe Award have made a mistake. This mistake dishonors Jim Thorpe and the very reason why the award is given. This mistake also dishonors Eric Berry and all that he has personally given to honor collegiate athletics. By the end of his career at UT, if you do not already feel ashamed for what you allowed to pass this evening, Eric Berry will prove to you that you needed his name in your record book this year, and here are a few reasons why:
1. The University of Tennessee is tied 8th nationally for interceptions with 17. Eric Berry is responsible for 7 of those interceptions, or 41% of them.
Ohio State University is tied 11th nationally for interceptions with 14. Malcolm Jenkins is responsible for 3 of those, or 21% of them.
2. Eric Berry plays for the University of Tennessee, which is ranked 4th nationally in total defense despite having the 115th best offense in the nation.
Malcolm Jenkins plays for Ohio State University, which is ranked 8th nationally in total defense, and 78th nationally in total offense.
3. Eric Berry has defended 13 total passes, while Malcolm Jenkins has defended 12. It's the difference of 1, but Berry is still the winner in this category.
4. Just a summary:
Jenkins - 3 INT, 7 INT Yds, 0 INT TD, 1 Sack, 32 Solo Tackles, 22 Asst. Tackles, 9 Pass Deflected
Berry - 7 INT, 265 INT Yds, 2 TD, 3 Sacks, 44 Solo Tackles, 28 Asst. Tackles, 6 Pass Deflected
5. Eric Berry is 14 yards away from breaking the NCAA record for career INT return yardage. Jenkins career numbers are nowhere near that.
6. Eric Berry has more INT's in 2 years than Jenkins has in 4.
I call for a change to the entire body of people in charge of this award and the way it is handled. It is clear that they do not care enough about the award for it to continue to be considered prestigious and honorable. Maybe they're too busy with their full-time jobs, or maybe they're busy with their family life, but the people at the top did not invest enough time to review the facts and name the proper winner of this award, who is Eric Berry.
I am not denouncing the feats of Malcolm Jenkins. He is a fine athlete who honestly came up short, whether you consider lifetime numbers or the numbers strictly from 2008. He was given this award based on the lack of mathematical education from the committee that decides the winners. I feel so bad that Jenkins was misled into believing that he is the nation's best collegiate defensive back, but the numbers show that Eric Berry is by far the best DB in the NCAA, whether you consider the entire 2 years he has been playing or if you only consider 2008.
You can call me crazy and laugh me off. You can say I favor UT and then write me off. But when the numbers are staring you in the face and the people in charge allow a mistake of this magnitude to happen, there can be only one thing to be done and that is to replace all in charge. Besides, they all have full time jobs anyway; what do they care? I know it won't be done, but it needs to be done.
I appreciate your time and hope for a speedy revision of management of the Jim Thorpe award, and especially for Jim Thorpe's sake, and for the sake of players in the future.
Thank you,
