Enjoy it. Really.

I think that is probably his line of thinking in relation to making a rash decision when he's most emotional, whether that be following a championship high or the lows of a crushing defeat.

The only exception to that stated timeline that I can think of is if he's already made his decision and doesn't need to take time to make it after the season has ended. If that were the case, I'm sure he probably has kept it under his hat so as to not become a distraction for the current team. That's the best case scenario for Tennessee as a program to not be behind the 8-ball.
My understanding is that he would make the decision before Summer practice. I think all AD’s want to avoid the Bennett conundrum of the coach stepping away during Fall practice to influence/pick an inside hire/heir. My understanding is that this has been discussed. Want to be careful to note that DW prefers Rick remaining and there will be no pressure for him to do anything accept what he wants to do. I also can’t lay odds on likelihoods given the fact that I don’t think CRB has decided. I think BTO is correct that all of the normal player meetings, recruiting, portal evaluations etc. will go on— business as usual. CRB isn’t going to wave goodbye in a tournament interview. If we win the whole thing, or even play in the FF, I can see that being a meaningful input, obviously, but otherwise he’ll take counsel with family and decide over time.

There is no reason at all why Oats would leave what he’s built at Bama to take a lateral move to their rival and have to coach against it.
If you oversimplify it, sounds overly simple. Coaching moves can be driven by relationships and support among other things. How Oats feels about Byrne vs White and whether he has everything he needs are just a couple of variables beyond “he wouldn’t make a lateral move”. As far as the rivalry goes, Oats has no investment in that when it comes to doing what’s best for him.

The only time we’ve ever landed an active P5 HC in our entire history was Jerry Green and that’s because Oregon offered to help him pack.

Some of y’all are setting yourselves up to be disappointed.

Especially when in the past 4 years we've seen UNC, Duke, and Kentucky not go out and get any kind of big name coach P5 coach to come in.

Any sane AD's first call is to Dan Hurley. Make him say no. UConn is eventually going to get crunched by the Power 4 consolidation of football and basketball, and he needs to find a home that will thrive in the new college athletics world. Why not Tennessee?

You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than Dan Hurley leaving UCONN for Tennessee.

Whenever it happens, just poach whoever the Iowa State coach is at that time. They have an amazing track record of high quality coaches. Especially considering Ames is a cornfield in blizzards.

I posted a week or so about our decline in faith/interest in certain HS prospects, and our shift to portal players in this recruiting cycle. This came from my friend who is a regular source for information inside the program, and a prominent (top ten) booster. I sat with the two of them at a game. In the middle of this, I started to question why some of these situations with HS players had shifted dramatically and quickly. There were reasons from the player side (hometown school for Mallory, money for Burries) that explained the changes in optimism, but it also piqued my curiosity about changes in attitude on our side. I asked whether Barnes’ plans about the future might be a reason for either a win now portal team before he goes, or if he might retire this year after the tournament. I didn’t get good straight answers beyond “Those are great questions”. I did get a straight answer that DW has a succession plan, and thoughts on what’s next that include RB having many options for remaining a part of the culture, but not steering the hire. All of that made me wonder whether we’re seeing our last dance with Coach Barnes. There were other details that suggested this might be the last year, but I’d have to step on some privacy to share them. Suffice it to say, I do not “know” that he’s planning to retire. I do know he’s considering it, and in counsel with those he cares about most. He had a similar moment a few years back, and decided he was happiest coaching, and returned. For all the whining we do, and noting of imperfections, I’d suggest we all enjoy this ride, with these players, and this coach. Whether he stays or goes, we’re seeing a brand of basketball, a type of player and a breed of leader that is rare to find these days. As always, I hope we win it all, but I’m going to pay attention and appreciate what we’re witnessing. We won’t see it again.
I agree we need to enjoy it, and I have been.

But my goodness I don't think I'd share any intel with the poster. While you did not want to "step on some privacy", you sure gave a lot of veiled hints that will lead to a lot of speculation.

Why anybody in their right mind would want this histrionic, basket case leading their program is beyond my understanding.

My decades of experience interacting with sports fans have led me to conclude that they like their teams to win championships. I just haven’t figured out what Dan Hurley has to do with winning…wait!…I’ve got it! It’s because Dan Hurley has won the last two national championships!!

This one was a tough one to figure out, not being obvious and all, but I got to the bottom of it. You’re welcome.

I’m sure someone will be chopping onions in the room with me when CRB has his retirement press conference. Impossible to overstate what he’s meant to all of us and the program. I want so badly for him to be able to go out on top this year - not even for myself and the program (as much as I want it for both) but for him to be able to do what everyone has said he can’t for most of his career. ZZ and Shack getting him back to the final four or to the top of the mountain, would be such a great ending to his coaching story.
I mean... I'm tearing up just reading this thread! (but I am a female - tho I don't mention it often).

I hope CRB stays. But, if he decides he has had enough there's one coach out there who would jump at the chance to come here. Will Wade is gonna get hired by somebody and win big. I know. He's a jerk. But, some would say BP is a jerk and a lot of people would love him back here. If not here, i hope WW isn't hired by another team in the SEC (Texas?)
Unless he's changed since his LSU days, I don't see any way DW would hire Wade. LA Vol told us a long time ago about the unified, concerted effort by UT Admin from the top down - all through the UTAD to do things the right way & to recruit players that also fit that description. When he was at UTC, I had wanted us to look at Wade - so thankful that wasn't in the card & now I guess he will take over at NC State next year. I'd say he'll do great.

Pearl should be first call White makes if Rick retires. I personally don’t think Barnes is retiring. I don’t get the hate people have for Pearl. He did so much for community and loved it here. He put us on map and made a mistake that our weak administration could have also helped more with. His style of play is fun to watch as well. Would easily rather have him over Otzellberger or Oats.

Bruce Pearl will never ever ever ever coach at Tennessee again. It is not a possibility. Some of y’all need to accept that.

I just want to know why so many hate the guy, when he is main reason we got Barnes. Pearl single handedly got Pratt Pavillion and luxury boxes put in. I really don’t get the hostility that some have for a guy that loves it here.

Maybe we're sick of his name being brought up every time Barnes loses a game and how if we still had Pearl we'd have 5 National Championships. So maybe it's not him we "hate"....

No one said anything like that at all. We are talking about if and When Barnes retires. To not even consider him as a coach is dumb. We know the guy can win.

I don't think Pearl could ever coach here again and even if he could it would be a huge culture shock to go from the MEN that Barnes helped coach and raise vs the little tantrum having kids that Pearl is coaching.
