Engagement Rings

I say take the money you're going to spend on the ring and go to Vegas and bet it all on one game of your choosing. If you double it, you can get the ring and still have the same amount you started with. If you lose the money, cut your losses and accept that it just wasn't meant to be.

Who doesn't love degenerate gambling?!?

I thought a certifiable and insurable ring went hand in hand.Plus Docs right on the trade up.Oh, and one more piece of advice, whatever you do, if you get a room at a local hotel or wherever, don't put your credit card or parents credit card to hold rooms for your friends that may be coming in from out of town(college friends, etc).Did that for my son and well, the rooms, bar bill, everything that wasn't accounted for or paid for by someone else , you're stuck with.Lesson learned (late).

If you have a jeweler connection (did you say cousin?), I'd make every effort to put that to use. The markup on diamonds (especially high-quality) is ASTRONOMICAL. I used a long-time family friend when shopping and saved about 40-50%. Certification is a way of "guaranteeing" your stone and could be valuable if you were to ever trade-up or sell.

As for the wedding/reception talk. . . .unless you're made of money, I think there is a lot of sense in the points made above. Have a modest wedding and reception, give people a chance to wish you well, then blow the big bucks on a real nice honeymoon that you'll never forget! (Think Hawaii. . . .)

Don't forget about the rehersal dinner. I had to spend a boat load of money on mine because most of my family came in from GA. Following the tradition of feeding out of town guests, I had about 80 people at the trough.

With the internet, I always tell people to book their own trips, but I think everyone should consider a travel agent for their honeymoon. If you find a good one they will maximize your dollar and your fun.
