Does anyone find it encouraging, even though we lost, that we had a Top 5 team on the ropes, only lost by one, and were driving for the game winning score late in the game. We did all this, and we couldn't run the ball. If we get our run game figured out this team could be scary good. Just my .02.

Definitely encouraged by what Cutcliffe has done with Ainge. The problems now with the offensive line are correctable. The RB's are talented.

I'm not sold on UF being top-5, anyway. I think there are probably two teams in the SEC West alone that are better. I guess we'll know as the season unfolds.

I'm actually much MORE discouraged by our 1-point loss due to the way it came. We had FAR fewer first downs, had NO running game, and made mistakes on special teams. Ainge looked good, but not as good as the prior inferior competition made him out to be. We had no answer for a mobile quarterback. We're now down two important defensive starters, Foster is questionable. . . . Tell me where the "encouraged" part should start.

Yes I am encouraged. Disappointed in Saturday's outcome but encouraged for future play.

Ainge will get better. He will start picking out the open receivers with time. He has two games to work on it before we play UGA. O line needs work. We just lost two starters on D and the rest will step up and improve.

All I got to say is the rest of the teams on the schedule better watch out becuase I think we just faced the best team with possible exception of Auburn.

Well. . . .we were told that they HAD been corrected, only to struggle running the ball against Air Force, then lose yardage on the ground against UF and have Ainge running for his life.

Never said anything about moral victories. I find it encouraging to see the progress we have made from last year to this year. I am not at all happy about losing to UF, I just like the improvement we have made.

Yes. There is visible improvement over last year on offense.

Once agian I never said anything about "moral victories". A moral victory is when you are Vanderbilt and are 25 pt. underdogs and lose by 7. I just said it was encouraging to see the improvement we have made from last year to now.

I guess I'm encouraged by the fact UT beat Cal and lost in the final minutes by 1 pt to Florida. Thats much better then where I expected UT to be at this point in the season. Especially considering UT lost their best defensive lineman and very good cornerback. Yes, I'm encouraged so far.

I am encouraged that we are playing much better than we were last year, we are still a fairly young team so should only get better each week. Our offense has life finally, and our D will be ok, we are just not very deep on D right now. I am still as excited about our team as I was before week 1.

In a word, no. Stated on an earlier thread that I was not convinced that FL was Top 10, much less Top 5, but that I certainly hope they turn out to be the real deal because it would make me feel better about our performance. Although I think this team will show more character than last year's, we obviously have significant issues with our O-line that might take more than sheer determination to fix. Having said that, I agree with most of the previous comments - things could be worse, we all know that! So maybe, my correct answer should be encouraged, but still nervous about how good we'll turn out to be.

I noticed most of the players interviewed during post-game locker room show cited team unity ("we're a family", in response to how they bounce back from the loss). I think we're on the cusp of the season going north or south depending upon how they react to this loss. We're about to see what the Vols are made of -- I'm hoping after the Marshall game that I can honestly say I'm encouraged! If we have trouble running the ball - or stopping their offense..... Yikes!

well to be more direct I am not encouraged!!!!!!!

The Vols lost to Fla.

The oline was horrible... no running game. lack luster recruiting last year... lack luster recruiting this year.

less than stellar play calling in the second half of the Fla game. let down against air force. defense has had some good moments but chavis has pretty much always had solid defenses..

fulmer was talking about getting back to fundamentals fore the Oline. Well if those players dont know the fundamentals for blocking at this point in their careers they prob will never have them. So why did they get recruited????

Call me a spoiled fan by the National Championship, but I am never encouraged by a loss. NEVER. No matter if it is one point to a debatable top 5 team.

We Win, We don't almost win. I'm starting to think there are some softies in this place. Softies that are telling themselves it's alright to almost win, and when we do lose they put more emphasis on the 2 good things we do rather than the 20 things we do bad.

If we improve in 2 posistions (QB, WR) and fall back at 5 (OL, DB, RB,DL, Coaching) tell me what in the hell is there to be encouraged about????????

No kidding. I think some of you are happy as long as the players are able to figure out how to make it to the stadium on Saturdays. We're UT. Your goals should be a lot higher. As VolunteerHillbilly said, moral victories are for Vanderbilt.

I respectfully disagree with that. LSU I believe is better than UF and UGA might be. I think UF's defense is really good, but I am not impressed with their offense.

How can you be encouraged by negative rushing yards. People act like it will be an overnight fix for the O-line. If it was that simple, it would have been fixed before the season started.

I think UT was fotunate to hang close with the way we played.

Another thing I just thought of, remember the Cal game. How hard core we were playing. How pumped our team looked?

I haven't seen that since Sept. 2nd. Where did that go? I know Cal might have been overrated but still. If you can get pumped and play like that against Cal at home, but you get you butt pushed around the field at home against Florida, let me say that again, hated SEC East rival FLORIDA then, please tell me. Whats to be encouraged about.

Each Saturday we've been running out of gas. I'm not negative I hope they turn it all around and start beating the hell out of people I'm just stating what I see, from week to week.

2005 is over. I don't compare the 2005 to the 2006 squad, because there different. This team is better than Florida, and we lost at home all-be-it one point but we LOST.

I'd love to have all the peices together right now . . . but if forced to choose, would rather be searching for answers on the o-line at this point instead of with our QB. surely those fundamentals are easier to fix mid-season that a shaky QB with no confidence (a la 2005).

I do see improvement and glass as half full. But there is room for much more improvement. Everyone needs to let things play out. There alot of good points and mistakes pointed out by everyone. Also something not lost on the coaches. You can bet they'll be working on it. Vols are improving which was not lost on the AP voters because we only dropped two spots.

I agree completely. A shaky O-Line can be fixed a lot easier than a QB with no confidence. Sometimes with the O-Line it is a matter of chemistry and they may start clicking and never let up.
